How to get a wired xbox 360 to share a connection

I bought a 35 buck 5 port Hub {Linksys} to share my computer net connection but it doesnt seem to work as advertised.I cant seem to share an ip address with the thang,should i have gone for a switch which is smarter and then a Router which is best?

A hub or switch doesn't do this.

I suppose a router will assign an address where a hub or switch wont.Maybe i can use it to network my old computer.
