How to Fix RAM Problem

by nigil800 / January 23, 2015 5:39 AM PST

Dear Sir or Madam,

There is a problem with the RAM in my laptop computer. Sometimes, the amount of RAM being used spikes to at least 75% while I am performing normal activities. The most that I can recall is 97%. The normal amount of RAM that is used is between 55% and 70%. The lowest point that it has reached is 42%. When the amount of RAM usage reaches at least 75%, my computer slows down to the point that it is barely usable until the amount of use decreases. I have had problems with computer speed that I realized are the result of RAM usage after beginning to use a program called Memory Booster, which reduces the amount of RAM used. The amount of periods of slow-down decreased, but the spikes have not stopped. I experience the RAM spike at least every other day. Is my normal amount of RAM usage unusual? What could be causing these spikes?

Thank you for answering my question. Have a magnificent day.

Sincerely,
nigil800

Maybe you need to add more RAM or reduce the no. of concurrent tasks, but since we don't know anything about what you have or what you're doing, there's no way for us to help you.

I've lost count where it creates troubles.

And time to do the canned air work. Way overdue.

I have two GB of RAM. At this moment, Comodo Dragon, Microsoft Word, Jarte, IDrive Preferences, and Memory Booster are running.

You should add more RAM - 2 GB not enough

Go to http://www.crucial.com and download their tool to analyze your system. Then install and run it. It will give you options for upgrading. I'd go to at least 4 GB - that will make a big difference in performance, and it won't be that expensive.

All of that running...

...and ONLY 2 GB of RAM?! You must be maxing out your RAM. And add to that some unneeded "memory booster" programs which may be slowing things down instead.

Also, are all these necessary for you? Is this a home computer or at office?

I see you have this cloud service for online backup, cost $50 a year. Why not buy yourself a domain and host it. Domain is $5-20 or more depending on what you get, and hosting is cheap as $4-5 a month with unlimited storage. You use a domain registrar. You can then use FTP for file access direct in your browser if you wish, seem like it's right on your hard drive. You also gain ability to put up some webpages if wanted and an email system for your domain name.

I see you have both Avast and SpyBot installed. In past I know antivirus programs clashed with each other, can't say if that's still true or not. I also saw MalwareBytes, but it plays well with other malware detection programs usually.

I don't know what it does, but part of the IObit software package Rob mentioned.

If fear of virus and trojan infections lead to having too many protective services running at the same time, conflicts can result.

it's because of stuff running at startup. Sometime when you install things they get set to run at startup. Stuff like itunes set thing to run at startup when you install. Plus if you keep the PC up without reboots you could experience memory leaks.

the more tabs you have open the slower your system will be. When you don't have alot of memory when you move to a new tab it puts the tabs into memory (Multi-tasks) if you run out of memory the it uses your paging file Windows Cache which is on your hard drive. So closing and moving to other tabs gets slow. The speed of memory chip is WAY faster then HD read and writes so this will slow you down. My old work machine was XP with 2 GB of ram and sometime it took 20 minutes to close a browser if i had a bunch of taps open. Now have Windows 7 with 8GB or ram with an I5 processor and it's super fast..

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
