Question

How to fix HP laptop model 15-D020LA smart disk error?

Apr 2, 2017 2:12PM PDT

Hello guys, my cousin wanted me to change the hard drive of a laptop because of this error "The smart hard disk check has detected an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, please backup the content immediately and run the hard disk system diagnostics" Error code 301.

Now, before changing the disk, I tested the laptop, tried F10 on start up, but no luck and F2 for system diagnostic and no response. Even pressed enter to check if it would just continue the start up. So I decided to just to what they told me and change the hard drive... I assumed the worst when I saw that the battery just falls off the device, and it was crawling with little insects... cleaned and changed hard drive. Same exact error, system unresponsive to any commands prompted on screen.

Any help will be appreciated.

Does Windows run OK?

If it does, clone this drive to the new drive.
If not, we'll have to know what OS you were running to determine how to get Windows running again.

It is not even booting.

The problem is that no commands works, it will stay on that black screen prompting the error message. And it is the same with the old or new hard drive. The OS on each drive is windows 8. Both working properly on a different device(now that I tested on my own PC), I guess I would like to know if maybe this is a problem with the mother board or any other hardware on the laptop.

Generally you can't move Windows from machine to machine
Apr 2, 2017 2:51PM PDT

Like that. But this is how folk learn this when they don't believe it.

It's a shame the machine wasn't running W10 since we could have saved all the drama and work you have to do now.

So, pull out the failed drive, and install the new drive and clone a working OS from one of those drives onto it and see where you stand. It should fail and we'll get to talk about restore media from HP next.
