Resolved Question

How to fix abnormal behavior of Sleep, Restart, and Power O

Jan 5, 2012 3:48PM PST

Having problems with the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down functions after struggling trying to get a defective external disk drive enclosure to work.

When I use any of the above functions the computer shuts down. I cannot wake by moving or left clicking the mouse as before. The computer shuts down and will not come on with the front panel power button. Ditto for Restart.

I have to pull the power cord for about a minute before reconnecting. Then I press the power button and the computer commences to boot and windows initializes very slowly.

I restored the computer to an earlier time before using the defective external drive enclosure, but I still have the same powerup/boot symptoms.

The few machines I had do that resulted in either or both the main board and power supply being replaced. We tried replacing the CMOS battery, resetting the CMOS values, changing those values and reloading the OS. In the end, bad board or power supply.

Abnormal Sleep, Restart, etc.

Thanks for responding. After multiple reboots with unplugging power, the computer appears to be back to normal overnight (fast boot; Sleep, Restart, Power Off all normal; W7 initialization is now its normally fast self and OK).

I did replace the Sabrent external ide/sata hd enclosure with another mfr's enclosure for sata hd only. The latter works perfectly. I experienced the aforementioned operational computer problems after I used the Sabrent enclosure with a sata hd and the esata cable which did not work and caused me to lose access to my internal secondary hd. The Sabrent worked OK with sata hd and USB cable. I am using the external HD for image backups.

Great that Win7 and my Gigabyte mobo can repair themselves.

Since it could be some OS self repair.

If you were so inclined you could look in the EVENT VIEWER for clues.

You could also look at the SMART STATUS of the hard drives for further clues.

I performed a virus scan with Eset AV4 and no problems were found.
