how to finalize DVD

I had some programs recorded on DVDs by a Samsung DVD player / recorder. It died and I bought a new one (Sony player / recorder). It seems that discs that were not finalized cannot be played. 1. Is this correct? and 2. If so, is there any way to finalize the discs? The Samsung will not recognize the TV and vice versa.

Have you tried with Sony?
