Resolved Question

How to Figure Out RAM Bus Speed

Apr 22, 2015 1:39AM PDT

Hey guys,

My laptop has a 2GB Kingston 1Rx8 PC3 12800s RAM.
I'm looking to add an extra 2GB RAM.

I used CPU-Z to find the bus speed of the RAM.
It showed the speed as 532.3mhz. Which equals to a total speed of 1066mhz.

But when I looked up for a PC3 12800s RAM with 1066mhz speed, nothing showed up. All the results had 1600mhz speed.

What is the actual speed here? and what does this "12800s" part mean? Should I get 1066 or 1600mhz?

Help me out guys.
Thanks.

Didn't work

I tried the Crucial scan.
But they don't seem to have my laptop model.

Gave me this message - "Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system."

In this case, what laptop?

If crucial doesn't list it, it's either rare or using uncommon memory like RAMBUS.

Tell more. Also, ask the laptop maker what sticks work.

Answer
I'd use Crucial for this one.

As to speed. Just like your car, a car that goes 100MPH will be fine at 60. So far, faster RAM works but slower RAM may not. HOWEVER there are some dozen parameters to check when buying RAM. If you want to avoid all that, get it from Crucial.
