Question

How to extend my main partition C with enough free space?

Mar 24, 2014 12:41PM PDT

After installing Windows 8 on my main partition C, it is getting nearly full. So, I just have tried to merge some free space from Partition F in Disk Management. But, that doesn't work. Some people tell me that is because the free space is not adjacent to my C partition. I don't know whether it is right. I simply want to extend my C partition successfully. Can you help me? Thanks advance!

For this job I use Easeus Partition Master Pro. Some folks here use Gparted, but I have no experience with it.

Good luck.

and a data drive. You PC will be slower if you paging file is set to the C drive and you don't have alot of space. Usually programs files aren't whats taking up space it's photos, music and videos. Also i would run CCleaner and/or clear your browser cache (CCleaner will do that) and see what you have then.

Then it's a multi-step operation:
1. Make f smaller
2. Move f to the end of the disk, freeing some space in front.
3. Move e so that it's adjacent to f. Now you have the free space before e, right after c.
4. Extend c with the that free space.

Be sure to have a good backup of everything on the e and f drive.

Resize your partition with some tools.

Yes, that is right! That may be because the free space is not adjacent to my C partition. But, that doesn't mean you cannot extend your partition as you wish.
Without that way, you also can try to apply some partition resizing tools to go on, like GParted, IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free and Paragon Partition Master and more.
All these tools are made to help resize selected partition freely.
Note: In case of any unwanted data loss, you'd better back up everything well at first.
Good luck!

OK! Do not worry! Without adjacent free space, you also can extend your C partition with enough free space. What you need may be some partition resizing tools as Chaing5676 mentions.
Or you prefer to follow a video tutorial to extend your partition:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jCeT7CbsKk
No matter what way you choose to use, you should save all your wanted data on different drives in case of data loss.

My ways may give you some clues.

Your problem is strangely similar to mine. In fact, I also encountered the same partition resizing problems last weekend. And, I also could use the "extend" option in Disk Management.
But, fortunately, I finally increased my partition with the help of a partition resizing tool like this:
http://www.partition-magic-server-2003.blogspot.com/2013/11/resize-server-2003-partition-free.html
So, I posted it here and hope it will help you out.
Just remember to save all important data well all time.
