Question

How to expand my C drive space on Windows8?

May 11, 2014 1:11PM PDT

Hello! I recently have updated my Windows from the Windows 7 to Windows 8. After the updating, everything is going well, except one thing. The C drive space becomes really low. There is only 5% of free space left. So, I come here and want to find a solution for me to expand my C drive spaces on Windows7. Any idea can be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

YIou can only expand a partition if you can shrink and move another partition on the same disk, assuming the disk currently is used for the full 100%. So the first question should be: how to shrink (and move) partitions.
For that, you need a partition editor. A good and free one is GParteD.

But since working with partitions can lead to loss of data, the first thing to do is to buy an external disk and make an image copy of your whole disk as it is now.

Pay attention

Pay attention to the last sentence Kees wrote. It's rare, but I have personally witnessed it happen when some partition management program goes wrong. Fortunately for me this was in the days before recovery media just being loaded onto a partition on the system and you make it yourself.

These days you want to make sure you've created the restore media first if you haven't already done so, then make an image of the drive, back up important files again to say a flash drive, and then finally do you go tinkering with the partitions.

Two clues for you
May 12, 2014 1:16PM PDT

There are always two clues for you to resolve this low disk space problem:

1). You can try to expand this drive space with enough free space:
Open Disk Management, shrink or delete other partition with free space and add the free space to your C drive by right clicking it there.

Or you also can use some partition resizing tools to help you in details, like IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free, Paragon Partition Master or EaseUS Partition Master, etc.

2). Change another larger drive to replace it.

Always back up all important data well.
