If you don't want to deal with iTunes

Provided you can use a PC, do what I do, use a third party media manager, such as CopyTrans Manager. IME it works quite well to upload supported media types to most of the newer iDevices & iOS versions. Go here for more info:

http://download.cnet.com/CopyTrans-Manager/3000-18546_4-10842241.html

*If you do not want to deal with the Download.com BS, potential spyware/malware, go here instead-
http://www.copytrans.net/download.php

Navigate/scroll down to the CopyTrans Manager section, then select 'Downloads' > 'download zip' (advanced users)

The 'official way' is to sync with the iTunes library on your PC/Mac/laptop. http://ipod.about.com/od/ipad/qt/download-music-to-ipad.htm tells about it.

It seems that Apple doesn't yet realise that more and more people only have a phone and/or tablet, and no PC/Mac/laptop. But they can find third party music downloaders in the app store.
