Try disabling it in Device Manager next. Remember without a specific model, no specific answer?

My wife has a HP dv7. Remember that's a series so the full model number of hers is:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&product=4011370

There's a oblong button above the touchpad to turn on/off the touchpad.

Remember that it only works with the HP issued OS and drivers.

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/how-to-disassemble-hp-pavilion-dv7t-3000-notebook/ has a lot of pictures but
-> http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/HP-Pavilion-dv7t-cleanup/Disassemble-HP-Pavilion-dv7t-3000-notebook-12.jpg

It's between the red callout and the pad.
