How to decrease ping and packet loss?

Feb 1, 2015 5:58AM PST

I am a gamer who uses a laptop and a WiFi internet connection to play various multiplayer games. I find that on some days my ping is manageable (about 70-90ms) whereas on others, particularly when other member of my family are using the internet, my ping rises to an average of about 150ms, and can sometimes spike at 1000+. I also regularly suffer from a 20-50% packet loss.

I live about 20 miles away from any reasonably large towns, in an old house with thick walls. My laptop is an ACER Aspire V3-572 15.6".

I'm not very good with the technical side of computers and am not sure how to improve my connection, I have tried a few different suggestions from various forums, such as downloading 'SG TCP Optimizer', however my connection is still unreliable.

I'm considering buying a powerline adapter, but I wanted to see if there were any better options before spending a decent amount of money. However if the only option is buying a powerline adapter I would appreciate any advice on which one to buy.

Thank you.

The first thing to do is get wired.

Let's try to avoid duplicating prior discussions why gamers get wired or where we use powerline networking.

Great, thanks!

I read some reviews for the highest product on the list, it seems to generally solve peoples connectivity issues for a much lower price than the other powerline adapters I was thinking of buying, so it looks like the obvious choice. Thanks for your time, the help was greatly appreciated.
