An icon on the desktop is a link. The text under the start button is a link also. The common word for 'link', by the way, is 'shortcut', but I assume they mean that.
So:
- what does that "regular item" point to (check its right-click properties)
- does it run if you browse to the executable (the .exe-file) in Computer or Windows Explorer and run it from there (by doubleclicking)
- what exactly does "not work" mean? Any error message?
