I just started my site , most of the on page SEO methods are directly done . I am still learning and would appreciate your advice on where to improve and how.

Before telling you how to create backlinks for improve your search engine ranking. I want to tell you about the backend process of google through which the ranking of site improves.

Google has their bots, crawlers or spiders through which they know that which site is added on the server. Google has its own norms through which rank increases. Your site On-page should be well optimized.
Sitemap and robots.txt files must present in your site.
Titles, descriptions length should be according to google settings.
After this you should create backlinks through high quality social bookmarking sites, Directory sites.
write some unique articles and submit in articles sites.
according to Google Content is king... So always make your content so impressive by adding your keywords.

IF you blog is new there are many ways in which you can create a backlink
1) Social profile - create as many social profiles and be active there and drop a link in about section of the page.
2) comment backlinks - comment geniune on high PR rated blogs.
3) Create awesome content for natural backlinks for people to link to your content
4) Answer questions on Quora and drop a link
5) Go to adobe and create profile to drop a link there
6) This one is tough but lucky people gets a big boost, edit content on WIKi and drop a link, if you lucky then you might get a backlink
7) submit blog to directories and Dmoz

First of all optimized your On-page.
Sitemap and robots.txt files must present in your site.
Important meta's don't forget to include in your site like(Title & Description)
Content performs the major role so always try to make your content so helpful and informative so use quality content creating backlinks.
Keyword use in your content,description etc.
comment genuine on high PR rated blogs.
Blog post
use search terms in your content by the use google analytics and google webmaster.

follow all the activities of off page seo and you will create back links by that like bookmarking, forums submission commenting on other platforms
