How to CORRECTLY delete all of MSN from computer...??

Mar 20, 2005 12:50AM PST

I recently switched from MSN dial-up to SBC/dsl. I want to delete all traces of MSN from my computer and would like to be sure that simply using the uninstall in 'control panel, add/remove programs' will clean my computer completely. AOL was included on my computer when I purchased it and I had a lot of problems deleting it. I would like to get MSN out on the first try....if that's possible.

I am running windows XP Home SP2, 512ram, 120g hd, 2.6mz pentIV processor.

Cadomom, That Depends...

If you've got MSN Explorer, then Microsoft says you should be able to simply uninstall it from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section.(See the lower section of the page at the link below):

http://explorer.msn.com.my/install.htm

If you've got MSN as the dial-up, then that also should be removable from the "Add/Remove Programs" section. But there are a few other items that need to be removed from the registry and file structure. See the link below:

http://www2.dslreports.com/faq/6878

The link below should help you "Cancel" the MSN ISP charges, if you haven't done that already:

MSN Messenger can also be removed from the Add/Remove Programs section.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response to my question. I knew [sort of] that there should be more to it than just uninstalling from add/remove on the control panel. Thanks for the links. I am a little nervous about removing such a big program...hoping that nothing bad happens to my computer or that I don't do anything wrong. With your help, I should be ok...
thanks again

not too sure everything MSN is gone...
Mar 21, 2005 5:16AM PST

Grif..I called MSN and cancelled service, I deleted MSN, MSN messenger, MSN toolbar, and MSN download accelerator, from add/remove programs. Then I went to "program files," and removed MSN folder, then to application data" and removed the MSN6 folder from all profiles. Then I went to "search" on the start-up panel and typed in "MSN". 126 files and folders showed up. I removed them to the recycle bin, thinking that if everything works ok in the next few days, I will then delete them. I don't know how to go into the register and remove traces of MSN there as the dsl/reports link in your first answer says I should do. Is it possible that there is still hidden MSN files and folders on my computer?? Or, have I deleted and removed enough so as not to cause problems in the future?? It's hard being a newbie.
Thanks for your help.

Cadomom, You Shouldn't Have Any Problems...

...as it appears like you've got enough...But if you'd like to give the registry cleanup a shot, here's how:

IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, BE CAREFUL. First, make a backup of the Registry. Click on Start-Run. When the box opens type in "Regedit" (without the quotes). Click Ok. When the Registry Editor window opens, click on the "My Computer" listing to highlight it, then click on "File" in the upper left corner of the window, choose "Export". When the next window opens, be sure of the location where you are saving it to and give the file a name like Backup. Click "Save". You now have a backup registry that can be double clicked and will replace the new one you?re going to make, IF you make any deletions you don't like.

You now might want to do a "dry run" using the instructions below, without deleting anything, just to make sure you've got it right.

Now according to the DSLReports article, click on "Edit", choose "Find" from the menu. In the "Find" window, place CHECK marks in the "keys" and "match whole string only" boxes. UNCHECK the boxes next to "Values" and "Data". Now type: "MSN6" (without the quotes) in the "Find What" line. Now click on the "Find Next" button. The registry search will begin.

If a folder/key is found which contains the "MSN6" title, then search will stop with the folder/key highlighted on the left side of the screen. Press the the "Delete" key, and choose "Yes" when it asks: "Are you sure?". In order to proceed on with the search, press the F3 key at the top of the keyboard. Repeat the process until all "MSN6" keys are deleted, then close the Registry Editor by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the window. Restart the computer.

Hope this helps.
