How to convert PAL to NTSC? *atleast look*

May 6, 2005 8:51AM PDT

My sony DVD player plays only NTSC. Found this out yesterday after i have several movies on my HD that conform to PAL. They are mainly SVCDs. I tried to do this myself but as u can see im here typing this.

I got as far as transcoding audio and demuxing the mpg file (if i have correctly termed it). There are 2 folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS (containing .IFO and .VOB files).

What i need to do next is to convert to NTSC by changing the frame rate, resolution, bla bla. Which program can i use to do this other than TMPGenc (trial period up)?

I am fairly new to this but i learn very quickly and easily. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. My hard drive space is approaching the megabyte range and i need to transfer my movies to DVDRs.

bet on Nero!
May 7, 2005 10:45AM PDT

MrFletch, your best bet to get FREE transcoding to NTSC is to download & run Nero from www.nero.com
But remember to unistall your current app first <BEFORE> install Nero.
Since you're already complaining of space, it would save you lots of agony running both. But if you're NOT willing to remove your old sony apps, then you have to buy bigger HD
One good thing about Nero is they offer monthly updates for FREE download. No questions asked & No rediculous forms to fill out!
REM because it's FREE their servers are sometimes overloaded so try downloading when you're not using your computer.
REM previous versions 55xx & Nero63125 are also available for FREE if your sytem can't run current ver6608.
If u don't know how to run the previous vers then u must contact me.

2nd option if you prefer to shell $100 us bucks then go for Roxio7x which can do nearly the same job as Nero.

Nero has everything FREE !!!
May 9, 2005 3:57AM PDT

MrFletch, reading your posts show you seem to have 2 major problems but correct me if that's not the case.
1. You indicate the software u are using is/or has run out of trial period.
2. Your posts suggest u don't know how to use Nero software. Unfortunately, this forum don't teach how to use specific applications. It's the reason i told u to contact me if you have problem using Nero, but u didn't!

1. Now let me address problem #1 - Software trial timed out.
If the Nero66 you're using has expired, you must download the current ver66012.

2. To problem #2, you said u have Nero66 but complain u don't have NVE. That suggests you don't have much knowledge of Nero software. If u need NVE, u have to download that seperately from Nero web site FREE.

3. You said u can't find where to configure Nero PAL-NTSC conversion.
First of all, let me explain that PAL-NTSC file convesion is available in your Nero66 main burning application.
You must select 'CD' from the NEW compilation window
The PAL-NTSC feature is available only to VCD & SVCD.
When you select SVCD, you'll be given compatibility option to select either MPEG-2 or MPEGAV format
You'll find the 'Encoding bit rate' which you asked in your 1st post and a bunch of tabs about ISO format and your cd label, etc, are all there!
When you finish setup, click 'NEW' button to open compilation window where you can drag your video files into it. There's <PLAY> button to preview berore u burn!
You can also select 'simulate' from "Burn" tab to ensure everything works according to plan before it burns!
Nero has everything perfect for FREE !!! so why are u complaining about expired dates? Just download current version.

4. You mentioned about NVE & Nero Recode. I donno if those have NTSC-PAL conversions. I only know that Nero Recode can convert from DVD MPGEG-2 standard to MPEG-4 or Nero Digital after you have completed step #3 above.
It may be possible it will let u convert your PAL SVCD to MPGE-4 but i NEVER tried it.
Your best bet is to download Nero help files separetely and spend time to read all the features and functions in Nero. That's the only way to learn.
Nero has everthing you need in vdo authoring but u must spend time to read the help files to know how to use all the features.
contact me if you need additional help
good luck!

No luck
May 8, 2005 5:05PM PDT

I guess Nero vision express, TMPGenc and that O------ C------ program (forgot the name) are the main or only ones that can convert PAL to NTSC from .VOB files or mpg. (anything expect .avi). Guess i have to shell it out again.

If u want to add any useful information please do.

Update
May 9, 2005 6:28PM PDT

Here is what i have for 1 movie and the steps i took:

(1) .bin + .cue
(i opened .bin using isobuster and extracted .mpg)
(2) .mpg
(i used DVD-lab Pro loaded .mpg transcoded audio
and demuxed)
(3)2 folders were created:
Audio_TS: empty
Video_TS: VIDEO_TS.BUP(-.IFO, -.VOB),
VTS_01_0.BUP(-.IFO, -.VOB),
VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_01_2.VOB

this is where i burnt the files using DVD Lab Pro and the DVD+RW didnt play in my NTSC player. Found out the movie was PAL.

Now, with the Nero situation, I have 6.6 but I guess when i was installing it, I excluded NVE, InCD,.. from the setup (custom). I cant find the cd to reinstall and im upset at myself.

I tried your method in step 3 in the previous post.
I selected NTSC and it asked me under "Encoding bitrate", try to fit to disc size...i entered 80 min as the max value was 82 min.

you said "...drag your video files into it.". Which ones?. i added the .mpg (it played properly) and that was successful but when i added the files in the Video_TS folder, the following problems were found while analyzing files:
- stream encoding which is invalid for a [Super] Video CD
- invalid video stream: 25 fps, 720 x 576 pixels, 9000 kbit/s, CBR

Error window came up when analyzing all the .vob files.

it asks me to turn off standard compliance or re-encode the video file. If i select re-encode is this where it converts it to NTSC?

At the end of analyzing more boxes came up.
The following problems were found:
-stream encoding which is invalid for a SVCD
-no video
-no audio

Where do i take it from here? i assume i should have re-encoded but ill wait on ur reply.
search through this post and look for my scattered questions.

P.S i have Roxio Easy Media Creator v7.5.

Update (more)

after adding the .vob files, I tried re-encoding but i got "Unsupported file format".

- Collapse -
Update to Update (more)
May 9, 2005 7:08PM PDT

ok here's what really happened. firstly, It was only the .vob files that gave an option to re-encode. i selected re-encode for the following files:

VIDEO_TS.VOB 46 KB "Unsupported file format"
VTS_01_0.VOB 44 KB "Unsupported file format"
VTS_01_1.VOB 1 GB successful
VTS_01_2.VOB 443 MB successful

its obvious that the files with large sizes were sucessful.

when i right click on the successful files i see:
Resolution: 480x480
Frame rate: 29.97 Hz
Standard compliant: Yes

what do i do now burn it to cd then copy the .mpgs that should now be in NTSC, back to the HD.
maybe im jumping the gun, correct me please.

when i previewed these 2 files that were successfully added, playback was jumpy, both audio and video. Recall that when i played the .mpg, playback was OK.

Which software are u using?
May 10, 2005 1:54AM PDT

Now what MrFletch? You?re gettin? me confused.
Which software are u using to create the vob files?
You said used DVD Lab Pro. In addition, u have Roxio7.5. So which of those are u using?
I don?t have any of those apps and don't have any knowledge about them.

Which version Nero66 did u try? Specify your full version 66xxx
NOTE that if your version Nero66xx failed to read the vob files or whatever problem u encountered, you must download the current version 66012 or try 63125.
In some special cases, you may even have to scour the web for older Nero to have your job done.
You must clearly understand the reason behind software updates ? they fix not only known bugs but they also add new functionalities and cover larger range of file formats.
That means, if the Nero version u used did not do the job, you must download the current version or 63125 than stick to your guns of not wanting to try another Nero.
You must also understand that to run another version Nero, u must first uninstall the previous ver completely. Download and run ?Nero Clean Tool? to clean up previous system files completely to avoid read errors which you seem to have.
You must follow the basic ?rule of law? for all vdo software or else you can?t overcome read errors.
Remember to always specify FULL VERSION of software u are using to enable those who have expertise to help u.

PAL-->NTSC conversion SUCCESSFUL w/ slight time displacement
May 17, 2005 3:49AM PDT

Okay, i said i was going tell the results yesterday (16th) but by time i started in the evening, it never finished till early morning.

Well everything finished successfully except for a slight timing displacement during playback. Ive heard of this and believe its a common problem. Dont know how it is fixed or prevented though.

But i must ask this, when transcoding or doing the NTSC conversion before burning in NVE 3, does it have to basically playback the whole movie, hence resulting in the process taking hours? Any other faster methods without any (huge) loss of quality?

I also found that a SVCD movie (split in 2 parts) took up a little less than 75% of a DVD+RW. I was hoping to cram 2 SVCD movies on 1 DVD+RW. Guess i have to move toward DL media. Are there any DL RW media out yet?

I used DVD-lab PRO to demux .mpg, making a Video_TS containing VOB files. Can nero do this or i must continue using DVD-lab PRO for this use?

wow lots of questions Happy. i love to learn and make use of the latest technology.

Congratulations!
May 18, 2005 12:36PM PDT

Congratulations MrFletch, for successful conversion!
I?m very delighted you?re now pumped up ready to rock-n-roll with so much enthusiasm to learn more! What?s so nice is u persevered and won the battle! Wasn?t your effort time well spent?

Now TO your 1st question of fine tuning to get correct timing, I don?t have any PAL SVCD with me to emulate the process to verify the problem. Only someone who has done it could help you with fine tuning.
A good suggestion is you must create a new post for the timing question with ?Create New Discussion? button to enable those who have knowledge see it.
With one down, another to go, you must create a new topic for the timing for everyone to see it. Don?t u think so?

TO your 2nd question about DL RW media? hohohoooo? you?re asking for trouble! if you find one, please come back to tell us. CNET.com usually gets first hint of such new products before they hit the shelves.

TO 3rd question about demuxing, its characteristics is such that every VOB encoder de-multiplexes VOB before it encodes to MPEG-2. Nero encoder can therefore do the same but u must be careful NEVER to interchange files you created with DVD-lab Pro with those you created with Nero.
Use the application u fell most comfortable with but NEVER interchange files between them.
Remember to post new Topic to fine tune the timing process. Congratulations for your effort.
