Question

how to convert .mia file format to other audio formats

Sep 29, 2011 11:32PM PDT

host app (Babya Logic) only exports as .midi & then often only as a curtailed file; want to convert direct to .mp3, .aiff, .ogg etc so able to upload to sharing cloud in order to expose my music & the upload protocols demand as one of the above

If I may believe http://filext.com/file-extension/mia this is a custom sound format, not recognized by other players.

Why no ask them what they recommend? My guess is that they will answer that their streaming music is not meant to be recorded and converted and uploaded to other sharing sites, because their TOS says something like "only for streaming use". Then it's over.

converting .mia files to other audio formats
Sep 30, 2011 5:20AM PDT

thanks a lot for your suggestion, but doesn't really address the problem i have: i have looked in vain for a conversion tool that can render my .Babya Logic composed .mia files into other, more common formats. my music is my own & copyrighted, albeit composed in the app as mentioned & so, to the best of my knowledge, Babya's developers have no issues with streaming or otherwise uploading content to a cloud but the app only offers export as .midi. additionally, the developer is notorious for lack of web response to tech probs, seeming only interested in selling upgrades, & their .pdf tutorial does not cover my dilemma. the cloud i wish to expose my music on is amenable but requires upload of content as more common files such as .mp3 or .aiff. the app i use also seems to have developer bugs in that the timeline only extends to 250 measures (about 2-3 minutes); if i complete a piece up to this limit & try to export as .midi there is a splash that advises 'out of range' & the Babya interface crashes. smaller .midi files are saveable out but would entail stitching together smaller fragments again in another app, such as Adobe Audition & thence saving out copies as .mp3, but this is exceedingly burdensome. i have utterly familiarised myself with Babya as a compositional tool & it suits my style of music so i would prefer to keep using it for now. i would appreciate any advice on getting a conversion tool (or any other method) that can render its native format code to other, more accessible ones

There's always AUDACITY

Too much written about use, capture, conversions so I'll just note the name.

If the app does not reveal what that native format is and more, a capture with AUDACITY is "an exit."

thanks a lot for your suggestion but it needs clarification; do you mean that Audacity can capture other-formatted files & render them to more commonly used ones? if so, how to do so & any other pertinent info would be appreciated. the host app is Babya Logic & the native file format is .mia - a very little used format that most other apps/tools ignore or are disinterested in. i originally put in lots of detailed info re my problem to the forum in order that the dilemma could be understood by someone out there with the tech knowledge/experience to be able to make precise suggestions re solutions

It seems you didn't go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to read about the program.

It's a recorder that records the audio you play to .wav or .mp3 file.

"It's a recorder that records the audio you play to .wav or .mp3 file."

That sums it up nicely. While I wish there was a better way this app has painted us into a corner with only one exit left.

problem of converting .mia files, continued
Oct 2, 2011 10:20PM PDT

due thanks to all involved for further ideas: have downloaded Audacity & had a good look: no help, really. the problem remains that .mia files are not generally recognised therefore not firstly playable in media player or other players (except for the source app Babya Logic, itself not friendly, except, as stated before, to out .mia files as .midi - with additional limits problems there), hence the capabilities by Audacity to record & save out audio as played back are redundant. Audacity not seeming a very friendly app itself either in terms of input/output protocols mostly bound up in forbidding patents law, & so, few options for exporting even if it was able to record files that are not recognised in the first place. the question remains re some effective way (e.g., an app not requiring programming skills) of actually converting the source code & its protocols from .mia files & outing the result as other, more recognisable formats, such as .mp3, .wav, .aiff, .ogg etc. any further ideas would be appreciated. i have already almost exhaustively searched the web for other friendly/able conversion tools that might deal with .mia files, but so far no luck

I believe you know the answer.

As long as the author locks up the content in a proprietary format the options are few and maybe just one and if you missed it, we'll repeat it.

Play the content and record it with Audacity.

-> About your comment about Audacity's friendliness. I expect that from today's users that didn't experience DOS days.
