How to connect WinXP WS to old Netware-server 3.2

A customer works with diverse Win95/98 workstations connected to an very old novell netware-server level 3.2.
Now - he has a new workstation with WinXP installed and would like to connect it to the old server. We installed the IPX-support and tried to find the server. But the server isn't found. The novell client for NT/W2k/XP level 3.2 isn't able to find any server, too. What do we miss or have missarranged? Is the above described connection possible? regards franschesko

I'm assuming that it's a windows XP Professional. In this case, your client is an old version.

Goto the following Novell Technical Support - Downloads page and download the latest client for NT/2000/XP.

Go get the latest novell client for the OS in question from ... Novell.com

Can I ask why you didn't do that?

You need the correct Novell Client for 3.2. When doing an install of the Novell Client do a custom install and select IPX for the protocol. If you do a regular install of Novell Client it will try to use IP protocol. You can find the Novell Client for 3.2 on the Novell web site (I think). Novell 3.2 is rather old software--extremely reliable but old. Novell 3.2 only runs under IPX protocol.

Thanks to all! First thing we did, was installing the latest version of the novell client for WinXP!. But after installation the client wont run in IPX-Protokoll - only TCP/IP! But it seems the answer is to install the client on customizable way for setting the protocol to IPX. Hope this will help. We will start again at friday at the Customer's location. Thanks and regards Franschesko

Ending this discussion I tell the story: the answer of Tom was a good help - thanks. Our problem was the little rest of a novell client installation in the winXP - system. Therefor all tries of installing don't go the way via a [typical] or [customer] installation but only did an updating of novell client. So we never had a chance to select a protocoll and/or bindery-functions. Removing ALL with a naming of "nw..." and "novell...." gives us then the chance, to have really new installation. Now it works fine. Best regards and thanks for a quick and good help. franschesko
