Question

How to configure SpeedFan?

Aug 25, 2017 1:26PM PDT

Laptop Model: HP 2230TX
Operating System: Windows 10 LTSB 64 bits.
Error codes recieved: 90B "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly"

My laptop fan seems to run at varying speed, in certain session (time between windows start and shut down), by sensing (?) the high temperature (around >50 degree celcius of CPU and motherboard). When it seems to sense the temperature, it maintains the temperature between 48-55 degree celcius, till I shut down the laptop.

In certain other sessions, fan seems to not sense (?) the high temperature (even >70 degree celcius of CPU and motherboard) from the starting of windows to the shutting down of it, it seems to run slow all the time at constant around 20% (read from Open HWMonitor).

Now at the start, laptop is sending "fan is not running properly error".

Temperature-increase to 70 degree celcius, seems to be due to non-emiting of the heat which existed, as I seem to be not using any program requiring high cpu usage, at that times.

Fan seems to either control temperature or not control it, in the entire session (time between windows start and shut down). This is what it seems till now.

There is no dust in the laptop, as I have cleaned and have put new fan. Service man has put 15 mm of Noctua-NT-NH1 instead of 5 mm of it. I don't know whether this is causing any temperature-increase or not.

I have now installed Speedfan, I tried configuring it, it is not working. I have tried to download configuration directly, my motherboard is not listed in the available configuration downloads.

Is there any other way of controlling speed of fan manually? What do I need to do to make my fan run properly in all the sessions?

Thank you.

Edit: My laptop fan now, doesn't even run in certain sessions to control temperature, it only spins for few seconds on turning on laptop every time, and stops.

Edit:
My laptop is still heating, and I haven't yet got solution. Now, I am thinking to configure Speedfan properly to get my laptop fans running. I have seen that last week, when I cleaned fan, it has 4 pinned fan, which connects to motherboard (?).

I have seen many guides in configuring speedfan, I am getting confused, as I am not having same options as shown in guides. I have below posted on how Speedfan options look in mine, how do I configure it?

My motherboard as shown in speccy: Hewlett-Packard 183E (U3E1)
In BIOS, I don't have any control settings except a single option of enabling or disabling my fan.

I have seen and cleaned only one fan, I don't know why Speedfan is showing two, are there really two fans in the laptop??

Inside the small box in the image, it has this text: Win9x:NO 64Bit:YES GiveIO:NO SpeedFan:YES
I/O properly initialized

Linked Intel 7 Series SMBUS at $5040

Above temperature of gpu is shown as 0 degree C. Is anything wrong there?

In most of the guides, which I have seen, there will be some thing in this voltage section, but I have nothing.

This post was originally asked in other forum, where I received no replies. I can't wait to get my fans working. I have posted the same here.

I looked for priors and the board is pretty rare.
Aug 25, 2017 1:44PM PDT

So my answer will be to do the deep cleaning, replace old compound and then keep up with the 1st of the month routine. If a fan is reporting as you noted, try the deep clean first and if it continues, replace it.

I've had good luck with fans from Amazon.com but if it's too rare you're back to HP, Ebay and such.

I think by now you get the feeling I don't support or endorse Speedfan. Mostly because folk have melted a few machines with it. Shouldn't happen but when it comes to fans and heat I find fixing the machine to be cheaper in the long run. Canned air and compound is under 10 bucks here. Far cheaper than a repair counter.

-> That all said, one of my HPs offered in the BIOS a variable fan speed or "fixed speed." My thought is the fixed speed is for folk that get annoyed at the variable fan speed noise.

Removing 1 week old thermal paste?
Aug 25, 2017 2:17PM PDT

Thank you for the reply. I have cleaned the dust, and have inserted new fan by applying new paste, just in the past week. Would you still recommend to clean that paste now?

It's a long post. I may miss things.
Aug 25, 2017 2:30PM PDT

Thanks for all the details but I may miss something and need you to remind me if I do.

So it's fresh compound. That's fine but if it hit my bench I still may check it out.

How about that wire I found in a laptop last week?

Speedfan used to have their own forums. But

My stance on this is DON'T USE SPEEDFAN. You run the risk of meltdowns. Let the machine run the fans as it sees fit.

That said, "Now at the start, laptop is sending "fan is not running properly error"." is usually the sign the laptop needs a deep cleaning and maybe a new fan.

Are you keeping up with my recommendation of 1st of the month canned air use?

If you feel Speedfan should support your board, file for a bug report at http://www.almico.com/forumindex.php

There is no dust, and the fan is new one....
Aug 25, 2017 2:07PM PDT

I seem to be not clear in that statement, I couldn't edit it back in the main post. Exactly it says, "The system has detected that the cooling fan is operating correctly". This seems to be not making difference.

Fan was installed last week, it does run now at the startup, but stops quickly after few seconds. I have cleaned all the dust last week. I don't know what is happening. I have no option than controlling fan via speedfan, as machine seems to be not turning on fan at all.

I don't whether this is windows 10 problem or not.

I tried configuring SpeedFan too, but didn't get proper guide (as some options are missing in my speedfan sections), or don't know whether it works for me or not. It would of great help, if fan it can be said on how to configure it.

Thank you.

As Bob suggested
Aug 25, 2017 2:14PM PDT

Have you gone in the BIOS and checked variable fan speed or "fixed speed." ?

- Collapse -
It has only enable/disable option.
Aug 25, 2017 2:25PM PDT

Thank you for the reply. I checked BIOS, it has only one option for fan, I can either enable it or disable it. It is in the enabled mode.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-g6-2200-notebook-pc-series/5296082/model/5340269/document/c03587882 shows a nice enough laptop.

But at the age it may be time to replace heatsink compound.

The fan error needs to be cleared up and I worry that speedfan can be interfering. Be sure to check that BIOS for options, remove all speedfan tweaks and go stock. If you get fan failures it's a hardware issue. READ ON...

Just last month I had an odd fan failure. The owner was upset because they tried and had to take it in. I worked the case and it was a new fan just like they told but some cable kept sneaking into the fan area and that was the failure. An inch of Kapton tape (my favorite for tight spaces that will get warm) and that was fixed. Min shop fee of 150 bucks, no charge for the inch of tape.

Good hunting.

Checking....
Aug 25, 2017 2:48PM PDT

Thank you for the reply. I will check this, as I have plaster too (which does go a bit inside) on the laptop cover, which has been pasted, to not allow dust inside through the opening which was caused due to a bad screw. I will remove the plaster and check the fan.

Are you saying about this black wire (photo taken in the last week while repairing):

If yes, isn't that looking far away from fan. The only other wires I saw were the 4 wires coming out of fan. I will think on this.

Rotating Slow
Aug 25, 2017 2:55PM PDT

I have removed the plasters, fan still is not running at greater speed. If I place my ear near the fan, I am hearing it to be rotating slow.

My view is this is a failing laptop due to hard wear.

Use up what time it has left. Don't spend money on it.

How to make the fan run?
Aug 25, 2017 3:19PM PDT

I use this laptop for using OneNote, which gives greater flexibility than book and pen. I am now, not able to use OneNote even for half an hour, as temperature raises to 80 degree C after that time. I need to get this fan running. I can use this now, only if I can make the fan run. How do I make the fan run? What is the problem here now?

- Collapse -
As noted. A tech could run the fan off USB power.
Aug 25, 2017 3:23PM PDT

I think the usual red wire to possibly the +V (5V) on some USB port. Still may get a fan fail message.

Here's a deal our office bought 2 of last month. We got them on Groupon delivered to our door for a total of 125.89USD. Link: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6A35CV8466

I see them on Newegg today and cheaper than any service counter. These are not the cheaps you see at stores but very well built laptops.

Error....

Error again... at the start up, it is saying "The system has detected that the cooling fan is not operating correctly."

Sorry for that. I was in hurry, and missed "not" word.

Now that we know this laptop has had a hard life
Aug 25, 2017 2:56PM PDT

I strongly suggest you make do with what you have and replace it when you can.

Laptops in such sad shape are only accepted to the recycle bin at the shop here.

Those drops can easily put cracks in the motherboard and are not economical to track down.

- Collapse -
My laptop isn't that bad :(
Aug 25, 2017 3:04PM PDT

It wasn't dropped. Only tape is applied, as if it is hurt allot. There is slight opening there, caused by bad screw. I will post the images now.
- Collapse -
The pictures look otherwise.
Aug 25, 2017 3:11PM PDT

As to the low fan speed either it's a bad fan, bad motherboard so a tech might hard wire the fan + line to a 5V source and button it up, don't charge the owner and wish them luck.

- Collapse -
Great suggestion
Aug 25, 2017 3:23PM PDT

If I have no other option, i.e. if I can't make the fan run, then I need to call service man or do by myself, the conformation you said.

Is there no option to make the fan run?
Aug 25, 2017 3:26PM PDT

But, before going for that, is there no option to make the fan run? Is it not a software issue (BIOS etc)?

As before after the installation of windows 10, fan was running at high speed, then I installed windows update, it worked properly then. Isn't this suggesting on software to be also the cause of fan not running here.

Thank you.

- Collapse -
Why I now think it's not software
Aug 25, 2017 3:28PM PDT

Is the age and condition of the laptop. In stock form the fan would run but does not. You've tried alternatives and now it's time to wire it for the last days of its life.

- Collapse -
We can fix it right?
Aug 25, 2017 3:12PM PDT

It is actually the screw problem. As I have moved the laptop display front and back on usage, the gap has widened a bit.

We can fix it right? Only the fan is not running at greater speed.
- Collapse -
Yes.
Aug 25, 2017 3:17PM PDT

New parts where needed, a new motherboard and it will be good as new. Those pictures are scary. So bad that I can assure you that unless the owner was there to replace all the possible parts we would not take it into service. It's a disaster scene.

I hope that you have missed the text :)
Aug 25, 2017 3:38PM PDT

Did you miss the text "photo taken in the last week while repairing"? The plaster one is the now one and that wire showing part was taken in the last week.

And other photos are all the now ones.

Or are you saying the laptop be in bad situation even after seeing that text?

Thank you.

My opinion
Aug 25, 2017 3:45PM PDT

Is just that. Just a person who ran PC repair shops and now just consult on tough cases. If it was just software the stock settings (no speedfan) would work. It doesn't and the pictures look like a laptop in rough shape. That hinge area is awful and could have stressed the board, broke a connection.

Like I wrote above, I'd hard wire the fan to get 5V from some USB port and use the machine till it dies.

If all you use is Onenote, a very nice replacement is far less than a shop charge here which starts at 150USD!

What to do?

I am WantToUseLaptASAP, I am using another account, as I am not able post here from that account due to adblocker or other reasons.

From reddit, "If I'm not mistaken, 3 and 4 chord fans can be set to always full speed if you disconnect the tachometer chord(s)"

Till now:
1. I resetted laptop, fan started running. Later it started running properly only in certain sessions, as before, as said in the main post, then ran properly only at the startup, then ran too too slowly in a way that it seems to be not running.
2. I installed linux, till then I had Windows 10. The problem stayed.
3. I installed Windows 7 now, as my laptop seem to be tested for only Windows 7 and 8.1, and has softwares and drivers for only them.
4. I am not able to update windows 7, as laptop is over heating. I am thinking to disassemble now.

If I disassemble, is it possible to do what that redditor is saying (quoted above) or do I do what you are saying?

Thank you.

Is it optimal to use laptop coolers? Can they cool a laptop without fan to the extent of allowing me to use it for 3 hours (I will be using often only OneNote)?

Thank you.
