How to chose new home audio equipment???

I am trying to re do my home audio equipment, i want to try and spend less then 2,500 bucks on sound only. i need a new receiver and speakers, Blue Ray (first generation ps3) and cables (all monster HDMI 1000 series) are fine. what do you think i should get???? Its going in a medium sized room that is fairly closed off
