how to choose which media player to use

How do I choose which media player to play trailers? I have windows media, Real Player, and VLC. My computer switched to VLC and I want it switched back to one of the others. Could it be one of the VLC functions I was playing with trying to get the VLC videos to work? Thanks

Probably. . .

Why not just uninstall it? Then choose which player you want to use and set it as default by going into the settings and choosing which file types to play. It's strictly personal preference.

Selecting the Default Player?

In reply to: Probably. . .

A few years ago I loaded a new program (Nero?) that had some sort of media player add-on as an option to load. I loaded it just to see what it looked like and the thing promptly took over my computer.

After that, everything I wanted to play or view caused this new player to operate. I've forgotten now how I solved the problem but I did only after much teeth gnashing <grin>.

As a review, how does one set the default media player on Win98(SE)? Thanks.

The two usual ways:
1. Go into that player and see if it has a menu option (like Tools, Extra, Preferences, Settings) where you can specify what file types (like .mp3, .wav, .wma) to grab.
2. Find a file of the right type in Windows Explorer (it helps to set the folder options to NOT hide file extensions for known file types), shift-right click on it, choose Open with, choose the program, check the "always use this program" box and OK your way out.

Hope this helps.

In reply to: Re: setting a media player

What do you mean by the right file type. Anyway what I did finally try dwas to download the Windows Media player again and now that is the player that plays the trailers which is what I wanted to do . Now there is no waiting to download the trailer.Thanks.

Again what do you mean by choosing file types? I'm still new at computer jargon. Perhaps you could find a previous thread that would explain it. Thanks
