How to change video card.

Mar 23, 2004 9:09AM PST

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (AGP)with 64MB DDR video memory on my Gateway laptop. I think it's damaged. A video display test failed - system locked up, had to reboot. Also when I tried to play a game where a change in resolution is required my laptop locks up too. I'm also having problems with startup & shutdown (I'm guessing it's the video card but I really don't know). However, I don't have any problems with my screen display.

But how do I replace the damaged video card. I don't even know where the card is located in my laptop. The slots at the back of my laptop are: battery, hard drive, memory & one with some wires (no idea what it is). I tried to open the back case of my laptop by unscrewing the screws but it wouldn't open and I don't wanna force anything. Also can I use the PC card slot instead?

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

There is no separate and removable card on a you laptop for video display as it is part of the motherboard. About all you can do with it is keep the drivers updated and properly loaded. These are available from ATI but, you might be well off to just use the Windows Update function of your OS as it will locate newer hardware drivers including the "signed" versions from ATI. It is also sometimes the case that newer drivers cause their own problems and "rolling back" a driver is necessary. I'd go the driver route first as well as performing some basic housekeeping functions such as defrag, file cleanup and "pest" removal as is frequently suggested in these forums. Good luck.
