The fact that you have three bars is not necessarily an indication of exactly how strong the signal is that your receiving. It could simply be being amplified by all the metal you are surrounded with. Therefore, when it cuts out/loses consistency it might just be being transmitted strangely off of the metal. If you want to amply the signal you should try a range extending adapter. One that I have had great success with is called the Wi-Fire, made by a company called hField. These adapters cost $49, and work as if the router was right there next to your computer!
