Question

How to best Optimize a laptop

Jan 24, 2012 12:14AM PST

Hi, I have a Dell XPS M1530 with 4 GB mem, it's about three years old, but was (apparently) top spec at time of sale. But for the last two years it has been running very slow. Over the years I have tried various software options such as Piriform CCleaner, and RegFix, Mechanical Reg, and a number of other CNET recommendations. At this point I'm looking for a new computer! I'm not a techie, I just leave it to the software default options on most freebies! So it could be the software does its job, but then I download a load of c**p and mess up the system again. Is there any one single piece of software that can be recommend which is idiot proof!

Answer
Almost certainly not, but,

one suggestion would be to find the Restore Disks that came with that machine,
Format the drive to remove everything
and run the Restore Disks.

You will find that you machine is back to the speed you once knew.

Of course, you would need to backup everything you wanted to keep before formatting

Answer
While restoring it should return its speed.

I find that most laptop owners do not clean the vents or do any hardware maintenance. This Core 2 Duo, 8400 video laptop needs the usual 6 month canned air vent cleaning or it will tend to get slow.
