How to activate film mode on Samsung PN50B860?

by John Grady / July 1, 2009 1:20 PM PDT

My Xbox 360 is hooked up through hdmi and when I'm watching a hddvd through the hddvd player but when I go to film mode it is grayed out. The only time it's not grayed out is on the tv source through antennae in, not even a digital cable box yet.

But even then the cinema smooth mode is still grayed out. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm pretty sure "film mode" can only be activated when your screen setting is "Movie" not Dynamic or Standard. See if that works.

In the manual it says "A 1080p 24Hz HDMI signal must be input to use the Cinema Smooth function."

When would that criteria be met? Maybe only on Blu Rays and not HD DVDs?

John Grady,

That would be either encoded on the HD-DVD, and as a setting on the Xbox output settings.

Ok, so most likely it won't be on too many HD DVDs than right?

I'll have to hurry up and get a Blu Ray player with some Blu Rays so I can check the feature out.

Nevermind what I just said. I guess 24p just wasn't encoded on the HD DVD's I tried.

Almost all HD-DVD's will be encoded at 24p if they are movies (music HD-DVD's, or things taken from TV, could be encoded at 60i or 30p, depending on the source), but an Xbox 360, even with the HD-DVD add-on, can't output 24p over HDMI, so you would need a different player to get a 24p signal to the Samsung to use those additional modes.
