First consider what's wrong with the old one. Than go to a shop and ask the seller what he offers that doesn't have that disadvantages.

For example: you have a desktop, but that's difficult to take with you. Then you will be offered a choice of laptops.
Or: your PC can't run Windows 10, and you need that. Then you will be offered a choice of Windows 10 PC's.

So the general recipe:
- think about what you want and what you don't want
- ask the sales person what he advises
If you have several choices and can't decide:
- post the choices and your requirements here for advice

Those tend to be expensive and heavy with short battery live and a short lifespan. That seem 4 things a college student doesn't want for a laptop he uses at school.
