How necessary is that cd that comes in the box?

For the Canon SD90 IS:

How necessary is that CD that comes in the box? Is it possible to transfer the pictures or videos from the camera to just my desktop or to iPhoto? I have a Sony Cybershot T-30 right now and it doesn't even have software for the Mac and I just transfer the pictures straight to iPhoto.

Do how necessary is that CD? Does it have anything else on it that I have to use?
