How much difference can I expect?

Oct 28, 2004 1:51AM PDT

Going from:

128 RAM, early P4 chip at 1.4 GHz, 20 GB HD, integrated sound card, WinME

to this:

1 GB RAM, Intel P4 w/ HT technology at 3.0 GHZ (800 FSB), 160 GB HD, SoundBlaster Advanced Sound Card, Win XP Home w/ SP 2.

Why not do a better upgrade, and get an Athlon 64 processor instead? You will probably need a new motherboard and new ram whether you get a P4 or an Athlon 64. In addition to great performance running 32 bit software,

an Athlon 64 will let you upgrade to 64 bit Windows and 64 bit applications. After 64 bit Windows is released early next year, 32 bit processors will seem very outdated. Here is an example of performance gains
and additional capability to expect from 64 bit software.

An Athlon 64 can run 64 bit software side by side with 32 bit software when a 64 bit operating system is used. When a 32 bit operating system is used, you can expect great performance running 32 bit software.
