How much difference between ser pack 1a and 2?

Aug 26, 2007 12:45PM PDT

I have post about my keyboard and mouse not working for 2 days all over the net with no answers,I guess no one knows.Seems like reformat and clean install. This is my moms pc, Dell 2400 xp home service pack 2 512 ram 2.40 ghz Pentium 4 ht dual processors, 40 gb HDD mostly free. The key board were talking about here is the standard keyboard and mouse shipped with dell products when you don't get upgrades. It will work in set up and bios, also when I ran diagnostics it worked. I do not know how to load drivers,I tried to see if that would work. When windows loads up,no mouse or keyboard to move around. There must be a virus or something hanging it up. If I reload windows my disk is ser pac 1a, will that be ok? Even if I do repair ,it still gets rid of service pack 2,seems I read that.Correct? Can I do this without keyboard functions in windows? should because the only typing is in the setup, correct? Thanks

This wireless keyboard and mouse. Are they battery powered?

If so, when was the last time the batteries were changed?

the standard mouse and keyboard that dell ships with there pc's if you do not do a upgrade. I also tried a ps/2 because there is hook ups for them on the back of this pc Dell 2400 dimension. my mother uses a labtec
it doesn't have any numbers on it.

No, the keyboard must work to enter the CDKEY.

Sorry but 2 days of posts is not waiting long enough. Almost all free forums are volunteer and it may take awhile for someone to read your post and give up an answer.

For faster repairs you take it to a service counter.

But ...
Aug 26, 2007 8:52PM PDT

if the keyboard works in the BIOS (as stated) and the OP suspects a virus or some other problem in the current installation of Windows, then it's likely it will work when booting from the Windows XP CD. That has it's own basic OS, totally independent of every error or issue on the hard disk.

I've seen this one go both ways. The owner installs fine and promptly repeats what killed the keyboard or they have some USB keyboard and forget about the BIOS setting or motherboard drivers.

More details are needed about events leading up to the failure but if they are ready to reload (all files are backed up twice) then it's worth it as a learning experience.

In closing have you run into that Logitech keyboard driver issue? A real nasty.

I am back on, The mouse and jey board were labtec, all failed

according to my mother when she logged on and it took along time then a message came up about symantac anti-virus she has said that it could not scan incoming email messages properly,go to their knowledge base, click on
OK.No pointer ever came on the screen, she said. I have tried everything
that I can think of,from resource CD for diagnostics (which it passed)different "ultimate boot cd" just tried it,it wouldn't even load.I followed some other directions from the tech guys forum to set it back to default, which did not work. I found some post about it on a site
same problem also dell pc's and one Compaq, but no solution. On the newsgroups I typed my problem in and there was a list of people with same problem the solution was to re-install windows. So the it is, sorry to who ever felt like I was being hasty about 2 days,I had been going non stop both days searching with no luck. Thanks for post though

I would like to know more about motherboard drivers and the bios setting you are talking about.Would they be on the drivers and utilities
cd that comes with a pc?

YES.

I've run into that keyboard driver issue too many times. It's on the CDs and they "load it up" and may miss exactly where the keyboard drops dead.

-> If you run into this, keep a keen eye on each step. Then on the next run, don't do what kills it.

Sorry Bob,I am just full of anxiety over this,it is crazy

I have ask before and got answer right away,I didn't mean no harm. I just figured from what I read everywhere else that no one will be able to help. I have goggled till my fingers are sore. HaHa, and every other site as well. The only answer I found was to reformat and reload windows
which I have never done before, but I think I can. I played with a 95 one time and re loaded it to a 98.but never XP. The disk I have only has service pack 1a.

Just a W.A.G. but..There was/is a Trojan (Amoung Many)....
Aug 27, 2007 4:08PM PDT

That Really goes after Symantec/Norton AV & SS. It disables various parts of AV and trashes many other parts of system (possibly brute force to get at Norton). You posted: "came up about symantac anti-virus she has said that it could not scan incoming email messages properly,go to their knowledge base, click on...".
If this the case then AV compromised. Possibly Symantec site addies have been added to the computers "Host" List preventing access to them..
I would suggest disabling Symantec for time being and see if you can arrange(difficult/impossible w/o mouse) an online scan or use your machine to download a Free version of another AV/AS to run scan in safe mode on Mom's machine. A slim hope I agree... Good Luck! Happy

That all sounds good,if I could get in the system to get rid
Aug 30, 2007 1:30PM PDT

of symantac,or do anything for that fact,If you can't type or move a cursor around then you are stuck.I been trying UBD4WIN, after I got it all set up to create the iso image. Well it will not work on Dell's,the only PC that gives them guy's that make this program the blues, and I got one !How bout that luck! Thanks anyway

More Sad News: Re Question SP1a v/s SP2....
Aug 30, 2007 4:51PM PDT

I'm willing to stand corrected (Bob?) but I believe IF you attempt to install SP1 on a machine formerly SP2 the install will fail ( short of a full re-format & possibly even then) and you will receive a message saying (in effect) The program OS you are attempting to install is older than current OS. Denied! Devil Sad Happy.

Keyboard Issue
Aug 30, 2007 10:27PM PDT

Did not see it posted, Have you attempted Safe Mode?

On boot repeatedly press the F8 key.
At the Boot Option Menu use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, press enter.

If the Keyboard/mouse functions in Safe Mode:

In Control Panel Add/Remove un-install any keyboard/mouse applications.

Use the icon System to enter System Properties. Open Hardware tab -> Device Manager un-install any keyboard and mice found.

Re-boot, allowing Windows to re-install the drivers needed for the keyboard and mouse.

May or may not work tho I've seen some systems exhibit this behavior and this procedure resolved the issue.

No Joy Safe Mode for KB/Mouse
Aug 31, 2007 11:35PM PDT

Sorry to hear that it did not work. Tho another thought just occurred and may be worth a shot.

Go back to Safe Mode, then plug in a USB keyboard and mouse. May get lucky ....

Or maybe a Windows repair may do the trick and prevent a re-install of Windows.

Luck

Difference between ia and 2,update on situation:
Sep 3, 2007 2:19AM PDT

I have finally fixed this machine,Dell 2400,Keyboard issues ,I want to thank everyone who participated in this discussion! I had to start from scratch and delete the partition(40gb's),my original ser pac 1a would not work,I used autostreamer to put ser pac 2 on the disk.It then loaded up but service pac 2 was not there,I must of did something wrong,I never used iso buster to get that one certain file out to make it work, but autostreamer never ask for or warned me about it.At least I was able to get it to let me do a reinstall because it would not with original disk
because of my system being newer than disk.I loaded ser pac 2 onto cd and put it in that way, updated and here I am using it now.Put avg 7.5 anti virus,I am trying spyware terminator,(seems ok so far,a bit strong with what it lets in,you have to ok alot of stuff). It has anti virus(clamv),but I didn't use it.I also am trying DriveImage XML,Thanks to all for your help!
