How much did you pay for your computer?

Less than $500 (wow! any regrets?)
Between $500 and $750 (what kind is it?)
Between $751 and $1,000 (what kind is it?)
Between $1,001 and $1,500 (what kind is it?)
Between $1,501 and $2,000 (what kind is it?)
More than $2,000 (what kind is it?)
It was free (how did you pull that off?)

Dell
Jul 26, 2005 11:28PM PDT

I paid about $1400 for this system, it's a Dell and has a Samsung LCD monitor as recommended by a major consumer group at the time of purchase. It's now about a year old. Already I need to update the graphics card and memory for advanced gaming features. It never ends...

Just 3 weeks ago I purchased a LapTop. It is a Gateway DS M680X. The screen is a 17.0" Ultrabright WSXGA+ TFT Active Matrix which I LOVE!It is huge and with the big wide screen you get the side number pad like on desktop key boards which is a plus. It has the dvd burner and an 80 gig hard drive. This was a bit expensive for an 11 yr old but I feel it is money well spent. I am considering getting one for myself and giving my 3 yr. old dell to my 5 yr. old. My dell works great and is still considered great machine. At least according to all the tests I do. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should purchase? Personally I love my daughters computer but hubbie hates the price.

$423.53 --> Compaq SYS, MON, HP PRN w/ 3Yr Warranty
Jul 29, 2005 8:09AM PDT

Run to Staples Guys ... no regrets. Staples great bundle package comes in under $500 and has enough power for the most of us.

Compaq SR1500NX system is a AMD 3000+, 256M DDR, 80GB HD, DVD/CDRW, Modem, 10/1000. Enough power for most of us ... heck that is an magnitude upgrade on nearly every component of my three year old system.

17" Flat Screen Monitor, large enough and is crisp and clear even for those of us going blind from decades of using computer systems.

HP Deskjet printer, ok ... it has great resolution is compact and HP has put out good printers, it was in the bundle and I personally will shy away from printers that use ink as we all know that is how they dig into your pocket book.

3YR Staples extended warranty - check it out folks, I am even covered for surges.

Now yes, there are a lot of rebates to get you down to this 423.53, and some of you will forego the 3yr coverage and save even more. $593.53 cash outlay with another 50/50/50/20 in rebates ... just proves it can be done without having to build it yourself.

BTW the Staples bundle ends 07/30/05 but it will happen again.

How Much did you pay for you computer
Jul 30, 2005 11:34AM PDT

I paid $599.99 for mine. It's a Compaq Presario 7360 and within the first week it began to have crashes. It may have been due to something that I was doing wrong, I don't really know. But within a month I had to wipe everything clean and install everything new on it again.

Cost of Computer
Jul 31, 2005 8:02AM PDT

I paid $725 for a customized HP Pavillion A700y. It was to replace my antiquated and slow computer. Since our home computers are networked (through mine), other people's usage affected my old computer's speed. This was in March/April '05.

After that I bought a HP BT foldable keyboard to use with my PDA.

I wish I could truly justify buying a laptop, but my usage would not be truly justifiable. Especially currently with Laptops prices set for students going to college.

4000USD on Alienware's 51m... worst decision i made with my alowence so far in my life... this computer is about as useful as a laptop as it is herding the buffalo and harvesting the grains... so far screen broke cuz sum1 forgot to screw the screws in, the graphics card works for about ohhh 10-15 mins before it kills everything, they voided my warranty cuz i tried to fix the screen which they sadi would be ok (they lied), and well the only thing it really is good at is being a space heater... wish winter would come it will be quite an asset to have on the icy roads.....

I just purchased a new computer for $279.00 got everything but the monitor. I could not built it for that. It is an AMD based computer with Linspire OS. Amazing what they can sell computers for when you dont have to pay Microsoft for an OS. Downloaded Open Office and I am good to go.

Just under $2000.00. It is an MDG (Canadian). Intel 4-3.06 ghz, 512 mb ram,ATI 9200ZE-128 mb video card,Samsung 160 ghz hard drive, CDRW Writer, DVD drive,19"Samsung flat panel monitor, Lexmark all in one printer, digital camera, stereo speakers, dolby 5.1 surround sound, optical mouse, windows XP, Windows works. It's a homebuilt.
Nov 24, 2005 9:19PM PST

Sometimes I wonder if it is worth the hassle to build your own, but you can still get a GOOD PC for less this way and it is also an educational process.

What you cannot do is undercut the cheapest computers such as you get at COSTCO, who also have the best return policy in the business.

I have nobody to send my homebuilt back to if it is problematic.

Not including monitor, printer, battery backup, etc.
Nov 24, 2005 10:38PM PST

I built mine myself. It is two years old. 2.4 Mb Pent 4, 512 Meg Ram, dual 120 M hard drives,.. In other words, it is the equivalent of buying a factory built for say $1500. Borrowed the Burners, etc. from previous computer and have since upgraded. If you don't count the XP Pro OS, the computer itself really only cost me about $500.

Do it yourself and save $$$. It is not all that difficult. Just ask questions. Listen to everybody but don't believe just anybody.

You have to understand makers
Nov 24, 2005 10:41PM PST

My machine was originally a HAUS Technologies machine, using a lot of pre-loaded software (it took a while but I did get the disks for them).

However, the only thing left that is HAUS Technologies is the case! I have used it to build a completely new computer, including upgrading the PSU. At the same time I took the time and spent the money on a new O/S, the one I had was the HAUS OEM version of Windows XP Home, I just bought the registered version of XP Home, so I can make what changes I need. If you want to see what my computer specs are now, see my profile.
