Between $500 and $750 (what kind is it?)
Between $751 and $1,000 (what kind is it?)
Between $1,001 and $1,500 (what kind is it?)
Between $1,501 and $2,000 (what kind is it?)
More than $2,000 (what kind is it?)
It was free (how did you pull that off?)

How much did you pay for your computer

I got mine on ebay for a buck, but when you add shipping charges it actually cost me $36.00. Now if you add in all the bad deals and junk i bought before i finally got it, then thats another $250 to $300. But still it was less than $500. It is an IBM and is tough as nails, it has to be to survive with me for the past two years. Yes it is old and slow but so am I so we get along just fine. That mule, old rivers and me.

Compaq 5310US
Jul 23, 2005 12:57PM PDT

I got my first computer, a stock Compaq 5310US when I was in 6th grade. It's been four years now and it's still running perfectly. It's excelent for average computer tasks. My father paid $1200 for it at Circuit City. We were able to get free dial up internet for a year. I wasn't able to get the $200 rebate since at the time HP bought Compaq. It was forgivable though. All in all compaq is the way to go and I would gladly buy an HP Compaq. All my specs are in my profile.

How much did I pay? Over $3K
Jul 23, 2005 2:38PM PDT

It was a Sony VAIO RZ71G purchase in Japan with full multimedia features including Gagapocket and two DVD burners, and lots of bells and whistles. P4 3.06 Ghz clock. It was right when P4 went over 3Ghz so I expected it to be expensive. Sure is a lot cheaper now. Prices of computers and peripherals in Japan only now are starting to coming down, thanks to Internet competition, but historically about 1 1/2 to 2x higher than Stateside. However, I got very good software bundled with it and it was in Japanese which I wanted because my work is done in both languages.

Build and Upgrade my computer
Jul 23, 2005 11:47PM PDT

My first computer cost $500. If was part of a class my wife was taking on accounting. It was a 486 with 4 meg of memory and no CD-Rom, sound card. Just basic computer. After her curse fininsh, I started to upgrade it thru the years, more memory, sound card, cd-rom, etc. My first major upgrade cost me $300. New motherboard, chip, memory and video card. I keep upgrading it thru the years and still using it since 1993. Is max out to the motherboard potential and still runs almost all the programs today with exception the newer games.

My second computer I build it from scratch. I won from AMD a motherboard and Ahtlon chip. Bought a case, memory which is cheap now and DVD dual burner, always on sale. It is not the top of the line but it can keep up with all games now and posible for the next couple of years. The most money I spent for a single item was my first printer. It cost me $300 in 1995. It still working, but I swear I will never ever again spent that kind of money on computer related item.

My third and fourth computer were free. Where my wife works (Car Dealer), they got tired of fixing these new computers and decided to thrash them. My wife ask not to throw them away and give them to her. She gave it to me, I fixed them and now I got four computer running in my network for the whole family.

So I never pay more than $500 for a computer to use. But if you add all the upgrades thru the year, I probably spend around $1,000 since 1993 thru 2005 for 4 running computers. Can you beat that?

It was over $2,000.00 and it was a Dell after having a HP crash shortly after garantee was up left a bitter taste in my mouth and cost over $2,000.00 as well. And their service was absolutely lousy so I went to Dell who have been excellent.

I paid $2,100 for my computer (Sony PCV-RZ56G) and $900 for my Sony monitor (SDMHX93)...overall, extremely happy with system; although after a little more than one year my hard drive failed (western digital)...no longer under warranty...had to buy a new one for $150).

Computer cost
Jul 24, 2005 12:33PM PDT

I paid nearly $1,700 for just the box, no peripherals except mouse, keyboard and speakers. It's a built to order Compaq with XP. However, I work on it all day; so I got extra RAM, extra MHz, has floppy drive, CD and CD recorder that's extra fast, 2 year in home contract for all service. And an extra Seagate hard drive almost the same size as the primary large drive that I ordered with it.

It's BIG! Had to rebuild my computer cabinet. No regrets at all, it's worth every penny in terms of speed, etc. It's two years old, figure it'll last me 1 or 2 more with luck.

Custom Built
i'm sure i could tally it at over $3000 if I went from begining of build in late 2003 to what it's at now 2+ years later

but that'd include a total refit in 2004 and a major upgrade this spring

How Much?
Jul 25, 2005 12:21AM PDT

It was about $570 at Wal Mart (Out of the box with 15'' monitor, plain jane keyboard, wheel mouse, and dinky speakers, all replaced), including taxes.....I bet it was more like $1100 when it was all said and done.....Haven't really had any problems, aside from a few driver errors.....I mostly just burn CD's, DVD's, and use it as the center of my home theater(I use the S-Video and Line Out), since I have a TON of music.....

eMachines W1640
128 MB nVidia GeForce 5200 FX video (Came with 32 MB Integrated, yuck)
VIA Audio (Integrated, no problems)
768 MB PC2100 Memory (128 MB standard)
130 GB HD (40 Standard)
HP LightScribe DVD Burner (Came with a CD Burner and a floppy)
Athlon XP 2700+ (Came with a 1600)
XP Home (Service Pack 2)

Also, the laptop I'm on right now (It's not mine, but my significant other's) is an HP Pavilion ze4400, paid $850 for it, and Wal Mart threw in a case and an HP PSC 1210v printer.....So it's not too bad, for what we need it for.

256 MB RAM (''Up to'' 64 MB shared for Video)
Athlon XP 2200+
30 GB HD
XP Home (Service Pack 2)

I think that's it, not much to upgrade on a laptop...lol

Paid approx. 600
Jul 25, 2005 5:14AM PDT

It is an Emachine and it works fine, my only complaints are that the monitor could be sharper and the technical support is lousey. For phone support you have to pay, for online support I have used it twice and been told that my problem couldn't be solved, only to have figured out the solution on my own after some thought. Recently my operating system needed to be completely reloaded, and the tech support person told me that there was no way to save the data on my hard drive. Well, actually there were a few ways that the data could be retrieved and I was able to save my very important info...I am so glad I didn't listen to him and thought about the problem....

How much did I pay for my computer....
Jul 25, 2005 6:15AM PDT

Initially... I spent a grand total of about $375. This was for an Athlon XP 2000+ chip, motherboard, 640 MB RAM and a case. The inital hard drives were salvaged from one box that died and another that I was putting in storage. The CD RW/DVD combo drive was a present from a client in the form of an Amazon certificate. The drive in question was about $95 at the time.

Since then, I've done a couple of upgrades, dual 250 GB Western Digital drives, a TV Tuner card and a DVD ROM burner. Additional expense: $458...

The keyboard mouse and monitor were all reused along with the 4 port KVM switch.

Best way to get a computer - work for, or know someone working for a company closing a site. Got my sister and my parent P4 desktops plus one for myself, plus notebooks for me and my ex.

Last computer I paid for I built myself - $1700 all said and done - Athlon processor, Radeon 8500 with TV tuner, Dolby 5.1 speakers... was meant to be cheap. Didn't work out that way.

Before that bought an HP 8870. Piece of junk - I finally disassembled it after it started shocking me when I touched the frame.
