How much carbon emmisions does a country import?

Mar 9, 2010 2:53AM PST

I have often laughed at the people who love to tally up carbon credits but this does give some food for thought for those who think they can buy carbon credits to make up for their carbon emissions produced at home.

Rich countries including several EU nations are "importing" about a third of their CO2 emissions, says a study.

US-based researchers used a global trade database to track goods and services, and assigned emissions to the countries where they were used.

Nearly a quarter of China's emissions come from goods exported to the West.

China recently passed the US to become the most highly-emitting country.

The Kyoto-based approach... fatally flawed, and the case for border carbon taxes is very considerable

But 22.5% of China's emissions are generated during production of goods and services consumed overseas...

It just goes to show that if you want to count carbon emissions, then you have to do the math for what you import, as well as what you do at home.

To me, this also emphasizes the fact that there is a market for developing new energy and manufacturing technologies that the US is in a critical position to become a world leader in, if we hope to remain an economic powerhouse in the years to come.

schmarbon credits....all a political hoax anyway. So now we want to conjure up more non-reasons that could cause international strife? How could we be more stupid and petty? Happy
