Resolved Question

How long will a HP Omen 17-an180no last?

May 8, 2018 10:53AM PDT

I am thinking about a laptop with the following specs:

Intel Core i7-8750H
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB)
16 GB RAM
256 GB SSD
1T SATA
120HZ Refresh rate - Screen

It's called HP Omen 17-an180no!
I have seen that it's a good computer for gaming and that it can run even heavy games at high quality. But my question is:
For how long whould I be able to run games at at least medium quality at 60+ FPS? I mean, when new games get realesed they must of course be harder and harder to run. How long will this machine manage that? I do not currently run games like GTA V or Wither 3 but perhaps I will in the future...

New games could drop the frame rate.

That's a given that is easy to predict. Games MUST push the envelope since if they didn't then as more capable GPUs come out, the game would be eclipsed by games the did push the edges.

This is why there are settings in games and GPU to bring up the frame rate or have more effects.

But let's brush all that aside. History seems to show us that such leading edge gets you about 2 years till the next thing. It doesn't mean the machine is going to stop working but that the edge keeps moving.

Thats not really the answer I was looking for...

Yes I understand that and thats why I wonder: How long whould it take before the games is so far ahead from my computer that I can't reach 60+ FPS at at least normal quality in the newer games? I mean, I don't want to buy a computer that is really good now but in two years can't run anything at decent quality!

Since all the games to date allow you to pull back effects

Then let's take a look at history again. I know folk that game with 700 series games but have to set the current game to lowest settings. When did those come out?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_700_series pushes that to about 2013.

While I consider this to be missing out on all the fun it does give us insight that the games may be playable for about 5 years.

Is that what you were looking for?

Thats perfect

Thanks!
That was exactly what I was looking for! Around five years, thats really good! Thanks again!

I am also interested for the same laptop! That's my answer:

Hello Kaspian,

I am also planning to buy exactly the same specs gaming laptop because there is a very good offer for it where I live till the end of the month!

I do a lot of research before buying for similar reasons.
My current laptop (4.5 years old) has a gtx765m GPU and a 4700mq CPU.

My main concern was if I should buy a 1070 instead of 1060 in order to last longer (and be more VR ready). But with the current offer that I can find this laptop, it is a no-brainer!

At first for 1080p 1060 is more than enough and will certainly last for 3-4 more years.
Secondly you get a 6 core i7 CPU which is almost as powerful as 6700K desktop CPU!
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8750H-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/m470418vs3502
This is huge for a laptop. In my desktop I have this cpu so I know!
I am doing game development so I need a fast laptop, but I do not want to pay more for no real reason (i.e. laptop with 1070 is more than 2000 euros) and I do not want to get one with i7 7700HQ because the new CPU much better (in theory).

Check also this comparison between (1060 6GB and 1070 mobile):
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-Mobile-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/m164129vs3639
where you can see that 1060 is more than enough for today's games! And it is not worth it to spend 400+ euros more for a 1070 today (if you are on a tight budget I mean)

Take also into consideration that newer games will use more and more the CPU's capabilities (multi-threading) so after all the above I a telling you that
if you have a good offer, just go for it!
It will certainly last 3-4 years.
3-4 years is also my goal when I buy (or assemble) desktop or laptop.

I hope that I helped!

Wow! What a detailed and useful answer! I did buy it for around $1100 and it works great! I’m also doing some game development (on a amateur level but still) and the 6 cores are great for rendering lightning and AI paths. For anyone wondering if they should buy this computer the answer is definitely yes! (If you have a good price of course!) It does not manage to get 120fps (which is what the monitor can display) in all heavy games but that’s a cou bottleneck so you might want to overclock it a bit, since it’s actually possible! Thanks again!

Answer
4-5 years

That's just a guess since I can't tell what new game will come out tomorrow.

Laptops have a very limited upgrade path.

That's why folks that are serious about gaming get a desktop.....better upgrade path.

New game comes out and it works some area of the laptop very hard.

You might be stuck to fix this other than to turn down settings.

With a desktop you might be able to upgrade this area.
