Question

How long does it really take for windows 7 pro update?

May 16, 2016 10:02AM PDT

I just installed Windows 7 pro into a newly built computer. After getting the latest drivers for my components, I tried to get the latest update from Microsoft. First I got an error but it was because my date and time was wrong. Now it shows that it's looking for updates, but this has been going on all day. Does it really take 24 hours to get the latest update? and if it doesn't, is there any other way to get the latest update?

Small world.

Just did this on another laptop and it took over a week for all the updates to download and install.

My answer. About a week or two.

The fastest way I know of is to let it update and when the machine is done, create an image that I can restore to. That takes about 20 minutes here.

Thanks, I guess I will let it keep running.

Just a tip.

Don't install the antivirus or such before these updates finish. I've seen them interfere with Windows Update (WU.)

Windows Defender is good enough during this time period so my routine is to get it all updated before I make my image for recovery the next time.

I reloaded 7 pro and it ran 36 Hours saying looking for updates. Finally in said 226 updates reeady to down load. It is now downloading and I suspect it will take at least 12 hours to download and install that many updates. Just be patient.

And maybe some drivers.

Stop windows update from running.

Set windows update to manual and select 'important' updates only.

Install those.

Now you can go back to windows update and get the 'recommended and optional' updates.

Sift through those and install the ones you want and hide the rest.
