Yes,
WinDV is a great small program for capturing video from a DV camera, but you will need a "comercial program" to burn DVD's.
Actually, AVI files from WinDV will become a DVD only if you use some of video editing software afterwards (Roxio, ULEAD Video Studio, Adobe Premiere ...).
I have a Sony DCR-HC40. I bought a firewire card and cable so I could copy my home videos to my PC. I must have tried five different commercial programs and ran into problems like sound, choppy frames, or just didn't work at all.
Then I found this free little program called WinDV, and bingo, worked like a charm.
Now, I just need to figure out how to transfer the AVI files to DVD! (^8
