How good are my speed test results???

by vt53040 / February 19, 2007 1:16 AM PST

I am running a DSL service from AT&T/SBC Yahoo DSL. It's the cheap DSL ($17.99/month). My results from my test on were 1.7 Mbps/downloading and 438 Kbps/uploading. My CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 at 1.8Ghz and I'm running Vista w/2MB RAM.

as your download/upload speeds. What are they telling you you're supposed to get? Just a quick look at what you're getting seems normal. If they tell you you are paying for 5 Meg down and you're only getting one Meg down, there's a problem.

Make sense?

DSL speed
by vt53040 / February 27, 2007 6:00 AM PST

I had my DSL speed problem fixed. I hooked up at another website, and talked to a tech and after posting my stats for my modem, figured out I was capped at a certain speed (1934/512). This occured during ramp up on initial installation. After some tweaking by the techs, got my download speed up to 2.6 Mbps after testing. The DSL I've been paying for advertised 3.0 Mbps down. So I'm VERY happy now!

I pay $12.99 for the old Sprint 1.5 DSL...I just tested it 1541/436...
I should probably upgrade to 3.0...and see how much better this AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual Core 2.2Ghz processor can do...

Download speed

A more accurate way to test your download speed is to find a trusted site from which to download a file. You won't actually complete the download, so don't worry about that. During the download, note the transfer rate, usually in kbps. After a few seconds, cancel the download. The download rate will vary a little, but pick a fair, average rate for that transfer. Since the transfer rate is in kilo 'BITS' per sec, multiply that rate by 8. That will be your actual download rate in bytes.
