How get data from Camcorder analog tape into computer

Oct 31, 2007 11:19AM PDT

Ok basically I have a Sony DCR-HC40 and have a movie recorded on the analog tape in the camera. How do I transfer that movie into my computer? I would like to use it for a project utilizing Windows Movie Maker, but am unsure of how to get movie into the computer.

When the camera is connected to the camera via USB, all the data on the memory stick syncs up, but none of the data on the tape does. Is there any way to record something from the tape to the memory stick within the camera? Is there any way to directly sync from the tape? Thanks!

It specifically addresses this issue. Hint: Using Firewire is a better bet.

Page 92 of the Operations Manual discusses connecting to a DV deck - same thing as connecting to a computer, but replace the DV deck with the computer - note the "i.Link cable (optional)"... your computer may need a FireWire400 port installed - this is NOT USB, they are different. Apple Macintoshes have had FireWire400 for years - most traditional windows machines have not included them. You will also need a 4-pin (camera side) to 6-pin computer side (maybe 4-pin - depending on the card you install).

As you have discovered, USB is used for things on the memory card, only.
