Impressive story.

But it seems it was tied firmly to the turning off of "unessential" lights, so I suppose it still will be.
As a next step, I suggest NOT turning on those lights after the hour.

Do you genuinely want to partake in this?

Well...it's a DAY and not just an hour. If you want to show your real affection for the earth and all the gifts placed upon it for us, don't lock yourself in a dark house. Get out there in the morning and take a good long walk in some woods where you can hear the sounds of birds and the rustling of living creatures under the forest floor duff. Though you may think it musty, take in the air deeply as it's better there than anywhere in the city. Don't do this with a group of people but alone if you can. Or, if you feel uneasy, take only your closest friend so that you can share the experience. This time should be enjoyed without worldly distractions and especially that of politics. Politicians cannot heal the planet. The planet can heal herself...and, if she considers man to be a disease, she'll take care of it.

Now, for my pet project...Before you take this walk, shed yourself of any smart phone you may have. They are a curse. See the trees, clouds and sky as they really are and not as a reflection in the screen. You don't need to share "selfies" of you adventure with others. If you enjoy the day, tell your friends about it verbally so that all human emotion isn't missing from the telling. Later, when it's dark, go ahead and leave your lights off but go outside and look up. See the stars if it's clear or clouds if it's not. If it's raining, feel the rain on your face and think of it as a blessing rather than an annoyance. Put yourself to sleep while planning your next day to further explore the wonders you experienced on this past day.

You know, Steven, if the earth were a paradise you could do
Oct 11, 2018 10:06AM PDT

all those nice things. But, never mind that now.
Notice that it's a "day" and an "hour". Seems like it's too hard to get people to commit. Happy
I doubt they'll be taking long walks, either.
For myself, our only incandescent bulb is in the refrigerator, part time of course.
I have 900 gallons worth of storage tanks for rainwater, which fill off the roof in one decent storm.
I don't drive any more, so my carbon footprint is close to zero.
That's it for me.

Only an hour. That's why I suggested to extend it

Shutting off lights for one lousy hour a year might bring on that "feel good karma" but it's useless in the longer run if it doesn't inspire us to do good things afterwards. As for paradise, such things are relative to the moment in which we are living. For one who's in agony from abdominal pain, paradise just might be relief from that pain.

BTW. Make sure to disinfect that rainwater from the roof. Birds sit up there as you know and dirty water can bring on plenty of abdominal pain. Happy

In your system, Paradise is relative.

In Jehovah's system it's the 'once and future' reality.

I make every day Earth day.

All LED lighting. Drip irrigation. And a Nissan Leaf for 99% of my commutes.

Hah! My plants are watered from the aforementioned

tanks.
I tried non-incandescents in the refrigerator but couldn't count on them.

There's not much savings there.

Even so I did find a nice LED for the fridge section. The freezer is a little rough so the search continues.

I'm having trouble with LEDs already
Oct 12, 2018 2:57AM PDT

Yes...the LED itself is long lasting but the power supply in the bulbs gives out way too soon. I did buy a bunch of cheap ones from Lowes or Home Depot (can't remember which store) but 1/2 were gone well within a year. They start to flicker or just stop working. I can do an autopsy and the LED inside works fine. I'm still not convinced of any savings just yet. I also suspect we'll need to give up on cost savings and be happy if there's any actual savings in energy. I don't see any way to truly put numbers to either figure.

You imply they were bought some time ago.

I think the package has improved.

That's been a complaint about cheap lamps.
Oct 12, 2018 9:18AM PDT

As to actual savings, I saw it in my utility bills. Of course I started with a house full of incandescants and moved to LED so the payoff was seen in the next bill.

Years have passed and I'd say 50 bucks a month savings over 6 years.
