So....

So you would handle each different type of phone on a case by case basis? Like I am trying to save texts that are on a MOTO G model: XT1042 that has Android 4.4.4 on it. So I would need to look for an app that would work specifically for that model and OS?

For the Moto G two things may need to happen.

standard procedure

So I am sort of hoping to learn a standard procedure for doing this type of thing with whatever Android phone. Would the thing to do be:
1) look for USB driver for particular phone. if no luck then---
2) look for an app for particular phone. if no luck then---
3) use phone as hockey puck?

So far, none.

Partly why is there is no standard USB driver for Android phones. At the office we write apps and with 5 phones I had to hunt down 5 different USB drivers just to get started.

Then you have to pick your SMS app.
