Question

How does forwarding a port works?

Apr 23, 2013 1:38AM PDT

I just want to get in depth on how forwarding a port on a specific device (Samsung Blu-ray Player) works? I am trying to connect my Blu-ray to the Internet and I just want to know if forwarding a port for my Blu-ray will make any difference.

Answer
To go deep is beyond what I cover in a forum.

But let's try the usual first. Put the device into the DMZ entry as well as turn off the router's firewall. I've discussed this before but have to keep this short as the goal of most folk is to get it working.

For example, you didn't reveal what didn't work. We know the Samsung servers go down (in spite of their claims they don't) so with only what you supplied I suggest you try the usual.

1. Put it into the router DMZ entry.
2. Turn off the router firewall.
3. Use the Google DNS entries.
4. If on WiFi drop the distances to 20 feet or get wired.

I have a lot more Samsung tips, even ones that the Ambassador has never heard of over in the CNET Networking forum.

Port Forwarding...
Apr 23, 2013 2:00AM PDT

Hi,

I have a Samsung BD-E5700 and I've been trying to connect it to the Internet via WiFi. Tried so many things with tech support. Tried manually configuring the IP address and used several for that. Tried changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8. Tried resetting modem, router and player and nothing seems to work. Talked to a supervisor and the supervisor told me to get call my ISP to ask them to forward a port for my blu-ray player. Did exactly that, and the ISP tech support told me that they need the specific port (confused by this time). ISP tech support said that Samsung should provide the port. Samsung tech support said that ISP should know which port.

So, I want to understand how this thing work so I can hunt the right party on obtaining that "PORT" for my device. I have this feeling that it shouldn't come from Samsung since it's just a player. It's not like a computer where you can access several stuff.

Please enlighten me Confused

Then I can't help.

Only Samsung can supply which ports need to be forwarded so I can't help there. I use the DMZ to either fix it or as a test to see if port forwards could help.

Try the CNET Samsung forum and see if the Ambassador has the needed port numbers as I do not have access to such detail.
