My ISP and what I think of them
Apr 21, 2006 5:47AM PDT

I use Adelphia cable in Santa Monica, Calif. They used to have some issues with email, and occasional outages, but seem to have cleaned all that up with an upgrade that heppened about November 2004 (finishing about February 2005). Since then, only one outage of three hours (and I'm on all the time), and 5 megs down and 256k upstream. It's so reliable, I dropped my legacy Verizon phone line and now use only my voice-over-IP lines (PacketCool.

SBC DSL vs Cablevision
Apr 21, 2006 5:48AM PDT

I did have a Cablevision cable modem, and switched to SBC DSL when SBC offfered a package deal. The DSL works a lot better for me than did Cablevision, even though they were supposed to be delivering equivalent bandwidth. I suspect Cablevision was using up all their bandwidth for TV. - For instance they never could deliver "movies on demand", even tho that was supposed to be available.
However SBC (now AT&T) has never been my friend. Their rates are high, they reneged on part of their deal without even an apology, and their customer service is not good.

Optimum Online
Apr 21, 2006 6:35AM PDT

I use Optimum Online Cable service. 15000 kb/s? YEAH RIGHT! Not in my area anyway. On broadbandreports.com, some users do report such high speeds, but not in my area. (Broadbandreports says about 800 kb/s here). Nevertheless, I am happy. Need service? Call em up and there here tommorow. I am satisfied, except for the speed.....

Optimum Online
Apr 21, 2006 8:07AM PDT

I used to live on Long Island and had Optimum On-line. It was not unusual for me to clock 8 MbS (1 MBS) , but often the web site sending me data couldn't feed me that fast when downloading a file.

If you use Wi-Fi, it may slow down any RF connected PCs with a weak signal, or if it is the older standard.

I'm now in TN and use Comcast. The PC connected directly to the router regularly gets 4 MbS, but the Wi-Fi connected unit runs much slower. I'll try to re-install the driver for it.

Media Com
Apr 21, 2006 6:46AM PDT

I used to live in SoCal, where the phone company (Verizon) has fiber optic lines everywhere. The DSL was blazing fast.
Now that I have come to Iowa, the DSL sucks, so I use Media Com Cable. Media Com is terrible. The brag all the time about all this great new equipment they have acquired (using that as the excuse for reaming us on the cost of the service), yet there is never a week that goes by without at least one significant outage of service.
I wish the phone company would spend the money on fiber optics out here.

SBCYahoo DSL
Apr 21, 2006 7:02AM PDT

SBC (AT&T) DSL stinks in this area (zip 63125).
I have never achieved more than 312kbs and most of the time it is in the 160kbs range.
Had SBC Tech out to check it out. They said this is the best it is going to be. I am 14,780 feet fro the switch and there is no plans to put in an RT.

Verizon DSL and happy with it!
Apr 21, 2006 8:27AM PDT

I've had Verizon DSL for about a year and a half and there has been only one short downtime due to Verizon problems. It is plenty fast for me and considerably cheaper than cable so I don't even think about changing.

Verizon Fios...Yeah Baby!

Bellsouth DSL Lite
Apr 21, 2006 8:30AM PDT

Very satisfied and it is plenty fast for everyday use. I just used the broadband test and it said 1000.5 kbps. That's pretty good for a service that is advertised at 256 kbps.

Dial Up
Apr 21, 2006 8:33AM PDT

I live in the country where its the only option (besides 70 a month satelite) I use earthlink and have not had problems. Real happy with them

- Collapse -
Also I have a question
Apr 21, 2006 8:45AM PDT

For some reason I only get 21 to 24 kbps speeds with my dial up. From what Ive been told by Earthlink it is because im so far away from the central box for the telephone. Its depressing, I had Comcast cable and wireless 802.11g when I lived in the city. I have a decent computer so I don't think thats a problem AMD Athlon XP 2600+ , 512 MB DDR RAM and a 64 MB Nvidia Geforce 4 MX ANY help would be appreciated if anyone has or has had this same problem

central box
Apr 24, 2006 1:27AM PDT

Yup as you get further you encounter more line loss. If it is a secondary line hook a phone to it and make a call on the same line if you hear any line noise contact the phone company as any noise on the line will slow down the connection. But if you live out of town or on the edges of town you might just have to live with it or go wireless or satellite

I do believe your supposed to have a filter on every jack, every phone in the house, each line except the one leading directly to the computer. Thus,no noise,no static,no interference.I have 8 of them around here.Made by Corning.Filter plugs into jack, phone goes into filter, simple.Should have been some come with setup unless they are looking for more bucks and want you to pay for em.

Earthlink dial up - very pleased
Apr 24, 2006 8:24AM PDT

DSL is not yet avaialbe in my area. And Comcast Cable is way too expensive. I am happy with earthlink and espcially the POP-UP blocker and other spam/scam security features.

Since I live close to the library, I use them on occasion when I need a higher speed.

I connect from home on dial up on a 56K modem using Juno. Have very few problems and have had great success in getting help from their support team by email. Have used Juno for 10 years. I use their paid version with accelerated upgrade.

Sacrifice
Apr 21, 2006 9:11AM PDT

I was connected via Direcpc for a while($500+ for the equipment which is now a lawn ornament). I discontinued service because it was too expensive ($59 per month). I am now on Dial-up and am slowly going insane. Just to reply to this poll was a major sacrifice. I got up and made a cup of coffee and your page was still downloading. With all this technology you'd think they'd come up with something affordable and dependable for us out here "in the sticks".

Fast Dial up , I'm cheap!
Apr 21, 2006 10:37AM PDT

I don't see any use to using cable based dial-up services for the pc ... The main reason is security ... Windows is so full of holes now that I need enhanced virus protection ... I use fast dial up service from SPNT.com , and average 52K on all my downloads ...

My connection is anything but ordinary... Just PRACTICAL!
Apr 21, 2006 11:16AM PDT

I'm tired of paying so many different monthy fees for this & that. Since my job has me on the go the majority of the time I have a single sollution - a PCMCIA Card from Verizon. Yep $60 a month, unlimited access anywhere they offer service! I live in Las Vegas & they offer an EVDO network so I average speeds of 400Kbps +... I'm a business user checking email, casual web browsing - I could care less about downloading music or porn. I need reliable access that I can use anywhere, not just at home. I have turned off all other services at home & using all "wireless" systems for my phone & internet. (no I don't have cable either - I've got better things to do than sit in front of my TV for hours while by brain turns to mush...) Yeah - I know - "wierd!" With my laptop I am productive & mobile at a moments notice...

How do you connect to the internet

DSL from Quest, which I fondly refer to as WORST.
Overpriced for service which is 4 times faster in outlying areas compared to the speed at the edges of the city. (which is where I live)

Imagine paying $100,000 for a Ford Escort....
Apr 21, 2006 2:11PM PDT

while someone in Tokyo paid $8,000 for a Lexus. That's the difference in value of what we call high speed internet in the US and what is available in say....Japan.

Not that you should go back to dialup but why pretend paying 100K for a Ford Escort is a good deal?

What we need is legislative pressure to regulate the entire industry. All of it.

Right now, we are getting ****** so that telco execs can make 25 million/year.

Uncool.

Ever hear of Clearwire
Apr 21, 2006 2:13PM PDT

I recently signed up with Clearwire. It's simply a modem that you plug into any outlet and into ethernet on pc. Can go anywhere. No cables or phone lines. I believe it works off of satelite. Broadband. I love it.

Clearwire spotty service
Jan 28, 2008 1:09AM PST

I have tried Clearwire and it is questionable. The service becomes particularly spotty in the rain. The technician indicated this was a problem. It is up and down at my home and I live within blocks of two towers. Living this close to the two towers, I was surprised to receive only half strength signals. They want a considerable investment of time to troubleshoot. I was never on the phone for less than an hour except the time I didn't give them the time. Finally, they are deceptive about their service claiming it is broadband, but they do not support streaming media. I think you'd be better of with a 3G EDGE network via a teathered phone or PC card.
