Here in Japan, almost nobody uses dial up or even ISDN anymore. The two most popular methods are ADSL and fiber. In the major metropolitan areas, cable is also widely used, but fiber is the fastest growing and most common broadband access here. NTT (Nippon Telephone and Telegraph) also was broken up by the government like 'Ma Bell' so there is NTT East, NTT West and a few others. The major ISP is OCN. Since that also was getting a bit ubiquitous, the government made them break up a little so now we have OCN North and OCN South, and a few more. I use Plala which is an offshoot of OCN. But there is no dearth of ISPs here; many to choose from, and they are all very reasonable compared to 'stateside' prices. My fiber connection costs me about $50 a month, and my ISP about $9 a month. Distance from the server makes a difference, and where I'm located, I get about 29-30mbps.
