How do I tell if a phone is jailbroken?

Sep 2, 2010 8:18PM PDT

Looking at the classifieds for an iPhone 3, I noticed that some were listed as "jail-broken" phones. I understand what this is, and do not want a jail-broken phone, at least until I get to know it better, and have a better basis for deciding.
My question is;
Is there an easy way to tell if an iPhone 3 is jail broken (while inspecting it for purchase), and is it possible to easily "un-break" an iPhone 3?

Thank you.

to a "normal" state by using iTunes.

Having never seen one, I cannot tell you what to look for, although I am sure you will get some pointers shortly.

Look for "unofficial app stores", like Cydia, installed on the phone. You might also want to check the phone's version number in the Settings app. If it's anything other than just a number with two decimal values (e.g. 4.02, 4.01) it could be jailbroken (I'm not too sure about this fact). As for reversing the jailbreak, to my knowledge's extent, you'll need a backup of an un-jailbroken software update on your computer. I'm not sure if people put stuff like that up for download, but it might be worth searching for.
