1. Virtual Dub has an adjustment for this.

2. Ulead's Video editor has this as well, but I find Virtual Dub to be easier for me.

Be aware that I do not offer ANY support for Virtual Dub. You must read the online manual.

Most I find at...

http://www.moviecodec.com

However, I find that sometimes the video is in some WMV (Microsoft) encoding, but namee .AVI. The GSPOT tool (see link) can help discover what CODEC is needed.

HOWEVER, the author of Virtual Dub had a run-in with Microsoft years ago over WMV support and had to remove that.

WORKAROUND!!! I toss the file into WINAVI which is cheap and can do the conversion so I can adjust the Audio Interleaving in Virtual Dub.

The answer is...

Human error in the code that makes all this magic work.

I've yet to encounter bug free operation.

From what I've seen, the answer is that the computer drops

some video frames while continuing to record the audio without a hitch. The playback of the video then gets out of synch with the audio because of the missing frames.

Dropped frames can be caused by several things among which are:

the computer is too slow
contention when writing to the hard drive
other programs running while video is being captured
lack of a dedicated drive for video capture
software based encode

The fix that I am familiar with is to use a video editing program. If it is good, it will allow you to move the audio to match the video, or to insert material to make up for the lost frames. Adobe Premier Pro or Sony Vegas 4/5 will allow you to do this. I am not familiar with cheaper software.

In firewire or even USB...

The capture is digital and have a timecode system so that even if a frame is corrupted you will not see this issue.

BUT the most common reason I find is hacked codecs.

I have not seen dropped frames in firewire, but my system

is reasonably fast and clean when I'm doing a capture. I did see dropped frames when my ATI AIW was capturing video. It even reports a statistic for dropped frames. It didn't bother the ATI playback software as it covered for the situation. How, I don't know. However, the problem could be seen when a video editor read the file. There, Vegas 5, the loss of synchronization was quite clear. Fortunately, the solution was also clear. Hold one or more frames until synchronization was restored, or, if possible, snip out a section of sound to allow the sound to be moved back into synch.

actually this is what i do..

i record videos, then upload them to my computer using firewire and pinnacle.. sometimes, i see dropped frames and this is usually my hint that audio is not synchronizing with the video.. is there an easier solution for this? i really need help badly..
