how do i switch memory from one drive to another on the same computer?

Dec 2, 2003 8:49AM PST

my problem was that my computer crached, and as it crashed it moved mostly all my memory from the first drive to the second drive. the first drive has 1.9 GB while the second drive has 39.1 GB so my problem is that i am trying to switch back the memory to the way it was before the computer crashed.

Restate question again ?
Dec 3, 2003 12:14PM PST

Oh ! No responses ?
Please give more information on your machine, like the OS, amount of RAM, processor speed, etc.
What exactly is the problem ? You asked about 'switching memory' and you refer to the drives in terms of 'GB', which which seems to indicate that you are refering to the capacities of the drive for holding data. Do you mean that the 'crash' moved data from one drive to the other (seems impossible), and you want it moved back ? Please restate your problem, as I am not able to 'see' it(and others too, I presume). If your OS is Win Me or Win XP, perhaps you can restore to the time where you want the status of your machine to be.

Re:Restate question again ? -- FAT32 and NTFS problems?
Dec 4, 2003 7:54AM PST

The problem with my computer is that, I installed xp to the computer to make it run faster. Everything was fine until I had to set up an internet connection with earthlink. So I installed earthlink and everything was fine until I log on to the internet, I was able to stay online for a while before a window pop up saying "the computer found an error and now will shut down." Before the computer turned off it gave me a one-minute to save my word before it would be erase. That problem only occurred when I would log to the internet, so I know it wasn't that virus in news making computer restart.
So I went to the earthlink web site seeking support. So I wrote an email stating my problem. They sent me back an email with information to fix the problem. The email basically said that I had to locate the (RPC) and select properties and to click on the recovery tab and change all of the failure actions from reboot the Computer to restart the service. So I did as the email explained. After that was completed the email said to run windows update and locate a patch. So I did that, then after I download a patch, I wrote back to earthlink to ask them for that name of the patch to make sure it way the right one. Well I waited for an email but then the computer crashed.
The blue screen basically states that there was a problem wrong with xp and it had to close in order to save my information. I tried rebooting the computer but every time the same blue screen pos up. So what I did after was that I grab the windows ME recovery disc and just try to make the computer the way it was when I first bought. When I placed the first disc of three discs the computer mention in order to get all of my things I would have to run "FDISK."
This is were the problem is at right now. So I ran fdisk thinking everything was going to be back to the way it was before. So after the computer finished reformatting the computer, everything looked all right, until I tried to install all of my programs back. The computer said that there wasn't enough memory. Well what I noticed was the fdisk reformatted the drive to "FAT32," giving me only 1.9 GB and the other drive "HP Pavilion" had 36.1 GB. Someone told me that I had to reformat the "FAT32" with "NTFS." Well that?s were I need the help. I don't know how to reformat the computer to get the "NTFS." So I hope you or anyone could help me.

Some questions to clarify things:

- How did you install XP to your computer formerly with Me ?
- What are the original sizes of the two Hard Disks ?
- What was the FULL error message at the blue screen ?
- What Me Recovery Disks were you using ? From my experience, a Recovery Disk (which comes with the computer) will format and install the OS automatically, so it is very strange that you are 'asked' to run FDISK.
- Please reproduced he exact error messages s far as possibke.
- How did you run FDISK ?

As of now, it seems that the situation is:

You ran FDISK and then try to install programs. Well, the FDISK prepared your computer's hard dry for use. FDISK is the first step. You then have to partition the drive if you wish to do that. Then you have to 'format', making it ready for installations. Because you did not format the first drive, an error reading of its size is made. This may also be the reason that the computer said there was not enough memory to install the programs. Note that the 'memory' mentioned is not the 1.9GB or 36.1 GB, which are the capacities of the drives Memory is a different thing. WinMe accepts FAT32 only. Win XP accepts FAT32 and NTFS. So, to solve your problem idendify the proper 'Recovery Disk' and try running it again.

one of my friends used the recovery that came with the computer to reformat the computer from FAT32 to NTFS. so the computer is now the same as it was once was. he said the problem was that I installed XP wrong and that was the reason it crashed, but I still think the internet connection crashed because I installed XP a couple of times and had to reinstall it because of the internet connection. still the problem is solve and thanks for your advice on the problem, papa echo.

That problem only occurred when I would log to the internet, so I know it wasn't that virus in news making computer restart.

That was the virus that was in the news (MSBlast or one of the variants). The problem only occurred when you logged onto the internet because it isn't the virus infection that causes the shutdown, it is the attempt to infect that triggers the shutdown. They gave you a solution to deactivate the shutdown process (another solution is to use a firewall like ICF to block incoming port scans from other infected computers).

Did you go to windows update and check out all critical patches (not just the one patch)?
