How do I stop this netbook from randomly freezing?

Hi I have an Asus x10ch netbook. I mainly use the google chrome browser and vlc player and nothing else. I have to close chrome to stop videos freezing in vlc.

I have all windows 7 appearances turned off for performance, page file to 4019 mb.Can;t think of much else for improving performance,

I have a suspicion that being connected to the internet impacts the performance.

Another small thing that happens to me is that the netbook randomly loses internet connectivity so I regularly clear/reset the dns using cmd and disabling the adapter which fixes it temporarily.
