How do I stop Google Maps from booting itself up?

This happens on my Android phone. Anytime I send/receive a text, when I plug it in to charge it or unplug it. I hate the fact that it registers my exact location when I never want it to. I would like to keep the App, but only when I open it to use it.
Please, help me!

On my Droid I go to 'settings', select 'location access' and turn off 'access to my location'.

Thank you crash9339! I'm going to try this & see if it will resolve the constant self-starting of the App.
Again, thanks for the reply. I'll let you know if it works.
