Question

How do I retrieve the printer icon in WORD/taskbar?

May 13, 2014 7:06AM PDT

Hi -
The printer icon that always showed up while printing in WORD (2000) stopped appearing a few days ago - all my settings seem ok. It's an inconvienence but I'd really like it back - can you help?

Answer
That's one old version.

Time to uninstall it. Remove all normal.dot files, reinstall and if you have a default printer it should show back up again. And no, I don't do this any other way anymore since the time to investigate it could be days to months.

I deleted and re-installed WORD but unfortunately, it had no impact. So, I stuck a printer shortcut in the taskbar (? - the one with START) and though not the best solution, it will do --- Tosca

But did you find those normal.dot files?

Uninstalling and reinstalling won't touch that file.

Normals

Yes - I deleted them beforehand. Actually, I deleted and re-created Normal first to see if that would make a difference, then deleted again before the re-install. The only Normal.dot on now is from that re-install.

Then off to the /A mode.

/A et.al.

/A didn't do it but that site is a great resource and I will be looking through it for a possible solution, short of messing with the Registry. That machine, besides using 98SE and WORD2000 is also not connected to the Internet - and I have no intention of connecting it - so I'm also limited there. But my stopgap is usable so I'm ok.
Thanks so much, though - you're always a help --
