How Do I Restore XP From a "DEAD " HD

Feb 7, 2009 12:36AM PST

As I HAD a Seagate 500 Gig as my Pri HD I thought it prudent to Replace it.
( INFO: I am NOT cheating, , I upgraded to new Motherboard and used old HD as an OS, that and Seagate problem has caused several restore options to be used )
Continue:
I cloned another ( WD ) HD with my system.
( Bootup required a Call to Mother for approvel,as The Restore sensed a different HD ( WD))

Now I that have my Pri HD Operating, I do not trust the Seagate as a backup , nor do I want to take the chance of having to call Mother in case I need to use it . Therefore I am trying to create a backup Data base.

Questions: I created a " Backup "image" ( not clone )on another PATA HD. The back up did not ask for a Floppy to be made. Will the Backup PATA HD boot. ( I'm thinking NO ). So How would I restore from a Backup copy.

From The XP Install DVD ????
( It appears that the 2nd restore option reloads the OS and calls Mother )

OR
Reload XP and Than Restore from Backup ???
( same problem, calls mother )

? Is the Entire Disk Image ( OS & User data)
in the backup system..

Any info would be appreciated,
Any "Links" would also be appreciated.
( I have searched the Internet, But seems everything is advertisement and not useful info.
(There killing the Internet with garbage!!)

Also: If I purchase another HD identical to the Pri HD ( excepting Serial Number ) will
a Clone Boot up without notifying and requesting approval from Mother (MS)

Thanks for reading, Hope someone can help...

Before ANYONE can intelligently answer your questions ...

about restoring the image we really NEED to know the exact process you used for creating the image (hint - the name of the imaging software, the exact OS and SP level (yes, we know thuis is the XP forum but Home and Pro have different capabilities and we have had Mac users and Windows ME post in here before), where the image is actually located (internal HD or external HD and if external is it USB, firewire, SCSI, or eSATA).

In general, the imaging application's help file goes into specific detail on both creating the image as well as restoring it.

You "restore" a cloned drive by ...

replacing the current master system drive with the cloned drive.

Cloning and imaging are NOT the same - a cloned drive is an exact copy of the old drive onto a different drive while an image is a file.

In your initial post you already indicated you cloned the drive but you then went on to state -
"Questions: I created a " Backup "image" ( not clone )on another PATA HD. The back up did not ask for a Floppy to be made. Will the Backup PATA HD boot. ( I'm thinking NO ). So How would I restore from a Backup copy."

I did not address the cloned drive, I addressed the IMAGE you clearly stated that you created and asked what software you used to create the image - you didn't get around to responding to that. I did suggest that the help file of whatever imaging software you used will clearly tell you how to go about restoring that image.
