How do I replace battery cables on 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Dec 15, 2007 10:40PM PST

We are trying to replace the ancient battery on my trusted Jeep. The negative cable, however, seems married for life to the post on the old battery and refuses to let go. In the course of trying to encourage the cable off, the connector now looks quite beat up - although it will wiggle on the post now, it's still not inclined to let go. THe entire terminal post of the old battery is pulling out.

Anyway, can I possibly replace the cable on this car myself?

Thanks for any help.
Oh, the car has about 125,000 miles. We just brought it to the Turks & Caicos Islands about 3 months ago.
