General discussion

how do I remove TechTracker?

Mar 22, 2011 9:19PM PDT

I can't find a way to do it ... and I see not help or forum to ask.
Sorry if this is in the wrong place ... but there is no help (that I can find) to remove this application. Thanks in advance.

Several notes...
Mar 22, 2011 10:45PM PDT

1.) Uninstalling TechTracker depends on your operating system, particularly as it's now available for both Windows and Mac OS X. Which OS are you using?

2.) If you have any future TechTracker questions, you can visit our CNET TechTracker forum, which is frequently visited by CNET TechTracker staff.

3.) We generally recommend not posting your email address publicly as it leads to abuse, particularly by spammers. Instead, you can enable the 'private message' feature in your CNET profile, which lets others email you without the threat of spam.

Regards,
John

OK, now I'll ask . . .

Running XP Pro, how do I uninstall Techtracker. A visit to your link provided NO information on how to uninstall it. Searching for uninstall took me to useless pages.

Standard procedure?

Should be listed in Add/Remove Programs via the Control Panel.

Is it missing?

I just turned it off for now. Sad
Just read:
---------
For the Mac users who are reading:

The Mac uninstall issue uncovered by previous posts in this thread has been fixed as of our most recent version of CNET TechTracker for Mac (released in mid/late December). If you are still having trouble uninstalling CNET TechTracker on your Mac, please try this version. If your problems continue, visit http://cnet.custhelp.com and open a support ticket for faster assistance.

I'm not feeling very good about this. Plain

John, nowhere . . .

Not in Add/Remove. I did a search of my hard drive for Techtracker, nothing there. Using IE8, Tools, Manage Add-ons, not there. But it sure is at the bottom of my screen right now. I have it minimized/on the left. But I cannot get rid of it.

It shows false positives as in telling me my software is out of date when it really wants me to upgrade to purchase. Example: Avast free, it shows it is out of date when it actually is referring to the paid version. Other examples available on request.

Back to you, how do I get rid of it?

From memory

Am I right in saying that you are using a new machine? I seem to remember you have a number on the go, but I may be wrong.

Why do I ask? This machine I am using is a brand new install of Win 7. it previously had Vista on a couple of SSDs in Raid 0 format and they failed, so I inserted a normal spinning hdd and installed Win 7.

I am still getting TechTracker emails! Now, that's doubly strange because I was getting them on my Vista system as well, but I never installed any TechTracker on either. I signed up for TechTracker on my old XP system.

So, they are tracking by some other system, possibly CNET login cookies?

my IBM/Levono ThinkCentre, about a year old running XP Pro SP3. I don't remember adding it so it may be controlled by cookies. And if so I'm not happy. Going to delete all CNet cookies and see what happens.

I deleted all CNet cookies. Opened the forums. I had to log in again but that damn Techtracker was on the screen before I logged in. This is pissing me off.

I won't say

I won't say I'm soooo relieved. people will talk! Devil

But wait Wayne. Looks like I have got the wrong idea here. You said TechTracker was on the screen before you logged in. On what screen, a browser window? Pop-up? Some application window?

Can you supply a screen print? I've never seen anything like that. Just emails.

Ahh got it.

It's that black personal CNET bar at the bottom. I usually keep mine minimised to the left.

But I clicked the "My software updates" and immediately got a new page with a "You need to update TechTracker" message.

When I closed that window I began looking around. This TT page shows "Software Installed on: MARKDFLAX-PC" and I found an option under "Settings & Help" pull down menu for 'Manage Computers'.

This showed "How to remove a computer". I've done that now.

It also tells to uninstall TT, and the help page for that is here;
http://cnet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1956

Since MARKDFLAX-PC is not this computer TT is not installed here so I will wait and see if me removing that from the list works.

Perhaps you can try the same if you haven't already done so.

Ah, that's *not* TechTracker...
Apr 6, 2011 10:26PM PDT

In short, that's a part of most of CNET's websites; it actually has nothing to do with TechTracker aside from linking to "My software updates," among other CNET-related webpages. There is nothing to uninstall from your computer because nothing was ever installed - it's just content on the webpage you're viewing.

Ah!

Since I could not find anything installed, this was my conclusion.
